Grade the overall draft

I like CB almost as much as you do... but I think a stout D line with a dominant player (KC-Jones, PHI-Carter- SB Champs) is slightly more important than CB. I'd rank CB a close second.

Would love to see Steelers get a dominant CB like Woodson again. Ike Taylor, Carnell Lake and JPJ were/are really good... but not game changers like Woodson.

Nope. You are the one missing the point, in part becuase you aren't understanding mine. You are too busy trying to oversimplify things to see them clearly.

No, every position other than quarterback does not have the same value, but there are other factors to consider beyond the value of the position. There is the talent of the prospect, how they would fit in with the team, and how high their floor is as well as their ceiling, and how likely they are to reach those levels.

Sure, an elite tackle is worth more than an elite safety, but how likely is the player to reach that level? Take the first-round options this year. Thieneman is a more advanced prospect. He is more likely to contribute from day one. He is more likely to be a good pro. He is also a better fit for the Steelers' needs because free safety was a huge weakness last season. There is no position switch needed for him to produce. Either Iheanachor or Fautanu will have to move frrom right to left tackle. If you simply say a tackle is more valuable than a safety, you ignore all of those points, which leads you to a poor conclusion.

That is where the evidence i provided fits in. You can try to dismiss it as a small sample all you like, but it clearly demonstrates how it is foolish to dismiss the idea of drafting a safety or inside linebacker in the first round. We have seen it work for the Steelers with championship results. Building through the lines is a valid strategy, but not when you pass on better players at other positions. We can agree in hindsight that passing on Christian Gonzalez and Jackson Smitn-Njigma for Broderick Jones was a mistake, right? (In my case, saying they should have taken Gonzalez isn't hindsight. I wrote that at the time.)

 

Mel was the greatest ever IMO, and the man who made me want to play D.

Where was Brady taken?
Where was Montana taken?
Where was Brees taken?
Did KC have a losing season to get Mahomes, I believe they went 12-4??
Where was L. Jackson taken?
Where was TJ Watt taken just to name a few of the top of my head??
So... if all of these awesome players (except L. Jackson LoL) were taken either without a losing season, could have been gotten by any team even without a losing record, or weren't even the 2nd player at their position taken, and we know you can't get to a SB without making the playoffs, why on God's great green earth would you want a losing season? Also stop saying people aren't saying it. Because they are.

 

You can't win playoff games if You can't make the playoffs, and yet slow people will tell you making the playoffs mean nothing. That's like saying having no strings on your guitar means nothing.

 

I'm in favor of moving off of Aaron Rogers. Next year's QB class is supposed to be really good, with multiple first round QBs being drafted. The Steelers need to know what they have with Will Howard and Drew Allar... prefer one of them to start (Will Howard getting first shot) to get a good evaluation. That is a win/win scenario... because of Will or Drew show the signs of a franchise QB, then we don't need to draft a QB next year... on the other hand... if we see no signs of either developing into a franchise QB... we will probably suffer losses this year... moving up up the draft board for a chance at a legit first round QB next year. That plan doesn't play out if Aaron Rogers is on the team.

 

1. This seems to me, and I could be wrong, but it seems to me that this implies that the coaching staff is too stupid to tell if the the Qbs are worth it, or not throughout all the camps, training, preseason, and practices.
2. Even if Rodgers does play it would take a little less then a miracle that he , hell that any Qb makes it through all 17 games without missing one, or more.

 

Honestly, both drafted well this year. I see both of them nearing the boundary of leaving the purgatory behind them. It does and it WILL happen eventually. The Lions were garbage for 40 years plus and suddenly a darn good, if flawed playoff team.

Last year the Browns were flubbing the draft badly. They did get a great young LB, but overdrafted a couple of QBs and then doubled-down on RB.

If either gets above average coaching (the whole staff combine), then they'll become a playoff team rapidly. The Jets did a major roster overhaul. They have a decent QB, with no potential but one would think is a solid, game-managing floor (a yawn, but not a a dumpster fire). The skill positions are young, talented and looking like, for now, something to envy.

Cleveland still has a major QB problem. Not sure they're any better off than us, maybe worse off. The alos lost their entire OL from last year and only partially replaced it. They might be one more draft away from dispalcing another AFC north team for wild-card/playoff status. Hope its not us. HAHA.

 

For Tomlin, making the playoffs was his super bowl. He was done. He was satisfied and so was Rooney. Glad he's gone, so glad and his awful coaching staff he chose to wet the bed, year after year, with conservative, high-school level schemes and game-planning.

Hope he gets hired elsewhere, double-win for us, get draft pick(s) and have a fairly easy team to beat, IF they (and we) make the playoffs.

 

See this^^^^^^^^^ is the problem. Some of You people are making this a Tomlin thing, I'm making it a Steeler thing. Tomlin is not the HC. I don't give a f**k who the HC is, or what team it is, you still can not win a playoff game , and therfore a SB if You can't make the playoffs.
I see this in the world every day. Some people get so fixated on a person that in all reality it matters not what they actually do, some people will dislike it just because it's from that person , it's a cause of usability to think clearly, and letting a certain type of things to color your thoughts. I repeat Tomlin is not the HC, and you can't win anything in the postseason if You can't make the postseason. There is no arguing this.
