Will Howard QB1 for now?

Mike McCarthy just said today they have been splitting reps between the QBs for the last 2 days.

Who is your source that is reporting Will Howard as getting all the first team reps?

 

old man Rodgers will probably play. But---he won't sign or say anything until all the offseason stuff is over. He doesn't want to do anything until he has to...

 

This is exactly right, for all we know the Steelers already know if Rodgers is coming back. He may not publicly announce it for awhile so he has an excuse to skip alot of the workout stuff without being called a bad teammate, but I fully believe the Steelers know and that he is coming back.

It’s in McCarthy’s interest to go with untested rookies and/or Mason. If Steelers do well, he gets all the credit. If they don’t, he has a readymade excuse. If they get old Rodgers , or any veteran and Steelers **** the bed and actually have a losing season, the heat is on him. This after Tomlin’s streak of non losing seasons. Personally, I want to see new Qb’s rather than go 9-8 or so with a Flacco or Rodgers.

 

The entire Aaron Rogers story is a distraction. The Steelers need a franchise QB and should have been drafting a QB every two years, from Big Ben's last two years in the league, until they found someone that could play better than Mason Rudolph. Take Ty Simpson in the 1st or Garrett Nussmeier in the 3rd. Forget Allar... as his processing skills are bottom of the barrel. Simpson and Nussmeier can process, make all the throws, have good to really good pocket presence, can scramble, and can improvise when a play breaks down. I think the Steelers will go Nussmeier in the 3rd because they'll draft OL and WR in the first 2 Rds. Oh, in case someone is wondering... Will Howard was drafted in the 6th round... and, outside of Tom Brady, only <1% of QB's drafted that low become solid starters. That means, Will Howard should not be taken into any consideration when deciding to go after a QB in this year's draft.

Been my thinking all along. Rodgers is a 'nice to have', not a 'need to have'. He's a placeholder as the team continues its rebirth (Rooney doesn't like the word rebuild ). The party starts with the drafting of a new franchise QB.

 

Maybe they are waiting to see if they draft a QB so both sides know if/how AR will fit in

Maybe they have deal in place like last year

Maybe AR is a nut case

Maybe all of the above

 

It sounds like Rodgers and Big Mike are cool these days, Mike has mentioned he has talked to Rodgers multiple times since being hired by the Steelers.

 

No to Nussmeier in the third.

 

This is what I have been saying all offseason. With only Howard and Rudolph under contract, and until something different happens, Howard is QB1. Even if Rudolph is the better QB currently, we know him well enough to know he is the backup.


Drafting a QB, and/or bringing in a FA, changes that dynamic. But this is what we have today.
