Prediction: Beck will be a Steeler

Mike McCarthy has the Offense Beck needs to succeed. Carson Beck is tailored to play the West Coast. For that matter, as @Blast Furnace pointed out, there are too many signs to indicate that the Steelers have him on their Draft Board.

 

Good baseline pre requisites. Here are mine; traits that translate to Sundays:



1.) Watch their heads when they are holding the ball in the pocket. Are they going through their progressions or not? Does it look like they are actually moving their heads and reading coverage post-snap, and are able to look at two or more of their targets regularly when dropping back? One of the skills NFL quarterbacks need to have is the ability to make two or more reads.

2.) Are they getting the ball out of their hand quickly? With the kinds of speed pass-rushing demons screaming off the edges in today’s NFL game, it’s vitally important that college quarterbacks show the ability to get the ball out of their hand in a timely fashion. The NFL range for NFL QBs time to throw in 2025 was between 2.56 seconds and 3.24 seconds per Next Gen Stats.

3.) Accurate throws. Watch the throwing locations. Is the quarterback you’re watching able to deliver the ball in a spot that puts the receiver in the best possible position to pick up yardage after the catch?

4.) Keeping the ball out of harm’s way is extremely important. This is also referred to as “ball security.” Do they have the ability to keep defenders from touching their passes? I don’t just mean interceptions either. I also mean PBUs (passes broken up). I personally chart PBUs during college quarterback game film study.

5.) How well can they adapt to the flow of the game post-snap?


Plenty more for certain but these are the big five. All of these qualities translate to the NFL.

 

The dilemma; If you really believe a QB can be the guy in a draft but maybe can't start Day1 you have to end up over -drafting them. Otherwise you run the risk that another team will. i.e. how many rounds do you let Beck drop?

I would say that all depends on how the winds are blowing that day. What is being taken, and when. Sometimes you see a pattern going in the draft.
I personally wouldn't take any of the Qbs until the 3rd round, but I don't run the show.

 

Wow! For a QB that some are projecting in the 4th round? That is one large reach....

The league isn't expected to see major turnover among starting QBs next season, but more than half of teams could feature a new No. 2. Thus, there’s renewed curiosity if you look through that lens. A few of the situations worth following:

• Vikings: Carson Wentz out (maybe?), Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy in
• Steelers: Pending Aaron Rodgers’ decision
• Raiders: Kenny Pickett out, Fernando Mendoza or Kirk Cousins in
• Falcons: Cousins out, Tua Tagovailoa or Michael Penix Jr. in
• Chiefs: Gardner Minshew out, Justin Fields in
• Browns: ‍

 

I am wondering if the Steelers are throwing a red herring out.

After listening to McCarthy yesterday talk about how some players get a Pre-Draft visit so they can go over any medical issues in person. I wonder if the main reason to have Beck in was so the Steelers could do their own Medical Exams on Carson Beck.

Is Beck's elbow fully recovered from the 2024 injury and the December 23rd surgery that year to repair it???
