This is totally wrong. Anyone that has an ear can tell You that Nirvana, Pearljam, Soundgarden, AIC, and STP sound nothing alike. Nor are their song structures even the same. Now their are bands that came after that do. This is why it's pointless for a musician to argue these points with someone that is not. It would be like me trying to argue about driving in Nascar with a Nascar driver. I can drive a car, and I've driven fast. LoL
There is a definite difference in being influenced, and being formed to sound like something already there to sell . This is why every genre has a drop off after awhile. Something becomes popular, and record companies, and , or backers then look for bands that sound as close to as possible as what is already popular. Hell they even sometimes put these band together. Then when the genre becomes over saturated with the same stuff it falls away for awhile.

Yes. Take Metallica, and mix in Alice In Chains, and you have God smack. Even down to the structure of their songs. Sounds pretty cookie cutter. Also I have heard that they really were put together.

Again being influenced, and straight up coping is totally different. Listen to even the stuff he re-did, and tell me even on the remakes how different they sound.

Green day is a cookie cutter band for that genre. You just proved my point.

No. Because I didn't write it. Why couldn't it be that they were also listening to that music, and dug some other the things in it.
You know just because You play rock, and roll doesn't mean you only listen to rock, and roll. Just because You play disco doesn't mean You only listen to disco. Just because You play Heavy Metal doesn't mean you just listen to heavy metal.
I wrote a song back in the day called Gunfighter Moon, and We still play it out, and I can't tell You the amount of times I've had people say....You should write more stuff like that. Guess what, I don't write like that. I write what comes to mind, I don't say, well since that's my most popular song, I must therefore write everything to be a country rock type sound. If it happens, so be it, but I will not force myself to do it. But many bands are forced to do this type of stuff.

That change in direction doesn’t always work. Take the black keys as an example. Loved their first few records. A large part of that was their lo-fi garage rock sound. Then once they got big they started working with dangermouse and others putting out this overproduced garbage. Guided by Voices is another that did it, but thankfully only briefly. Listen to Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes and compare it to the record Ocasek produced for them. Going in the other direction Radiohead went from pretty much straight rock for a couple records and then completely changed gears with Ok Computer and Kid A. They basically said hey we are getting bored, we go a more expiremental route or no more Radiohead. As much as I love that lo-fi garage rock sound ok computer and kid a are outstanding records

You know everyone of these bands that I call cookie cutter, I play some of their stuff.
That's how I know about their song structures.
You gotta play stuff You don't like if You play out, it's how it works.
Yes @strummerfan@strummerfan some bands get worse with more time, more money, and abilities to do more things, but I don't hold it against them as long as they are being themselves. Some get better, and some get worse.
Also just because I don't like something doesn't mean it's bad, or cookie cutter, sometimes I just don't like their stuff.
Example: ACDC. I can't stand them, I play some of their stuff because I have to, but I don't think they are cookie cutter. I think they are legit their own thing, and many have ripped them off. I'm just not a fan.
