Even if the game was a blowout they couldn't just put Howard in to get some snaps, he was the emergency third QB which means he could only play if the other two got injured.

 

And again it was handled correctly

Teams can technically dress three QBs as part of their 48-player roster. Understand? This is separate from the emergency QB rule.

Information is good. When I evaluate a player, most of the information is something you learn from watching them play. Watching film of that player. Stop watches. Evaluating the talent they play with. The talent they play against. The offensive systems they play in and the coaching they get. No matter how much data you get, there are always things you can't learn unless you talk to people and coaches, interviewing the players themselves, and trusting what you see them do in big moments in games.

There are hundreds of factors that were never given a numeric value and fed into a computer, but were evaluated on what you can see and graded. How do they handle pressure? Can they make off-platform throws? Can they make layered throws with the proper pace and place the ball over the linebackers and in front of the safeties? Do they have leadership qualities? Can they move in the pocket and keep their eyes downfield? Can they throw with anticipation? And on and on and on.

So, as I said in my earlier post. More information is good. The more the better. It's just hard to use when you don't have all the variables and understand the way the data is gathered and under what circumstances and conditions. Context is everything. The people that gather this information and use it need to be fluent in how it is deciphered and applied to evaluating talent.

All the same stuff was and is still done by many scouts and evaluators with their eyes and watching a ton of film. It just comes more from what your eyes tell you instead of the pure analytics that you post here. All the data is great, but without the context some of it is like reading a foreign language. When the data and the people that understand that data also have vast football knowledge, it is a tool that can help identify things that are very difficult to do manually.

We're in the digital age, and the people that do the best job of combining the pure analytics with the evaluation of the pure human aspects of quarterbacks will have the best chance of successfully identifying who can play at the NFL level and who can't.

 

Will Howard is a 6th round pick

The last time a 6th was drafted who took his team to a Super Bowl he was drafted 26 years ago

Going into the season thinking “let’s see what he has as the starter” is beyond foolish

 

Just looking at the scouting report he seems like MR with a bit more mobility and less accuracy on the deep passes. Both have difficulty against pressure and more often then not tend to lose accuracy on their passes and make poor decisions

 

Just going by the fact that a6th round pick has more than worked out, makes the entire notion that a 6th round pick is worthless until proven otherwise, worthless.


What do I expect vs what do I know... these are not always the same. I don't think we go into this season with WH as the main option or the only option at QB. But, I do expect WH to be an option at QB this season.

 

I agree that "hope" is not a plan. But what are the other options? They are just as unprecedented.

You have a 37 and a 39 year old Rich Gannon and Peyton Manning as SB winning QBs. And then a 41 and 43 year old Brady. However, one could argue that all three were BETTER QBs than Rodgers or Cousins - the leading old guy FA's available to the 2026 Steelers.

So if we want to argue precedent....there is not much precedent for the 2026 Steelers known QB options leading to a big winning season.

If we take the idea that the Steelers have a ceiling of 9 wins or so and a WC round exit at best...then why not push that for all it is worth and get a good solid read on what Howard is and is not? I suspect he will be less than the hype. But it is more important to the long term success of the organization that they find that out than Rodgers gets one last rodeo.

All that being mashed out on the keyboard....it doesn't matter. The Steelers have demonstrated that they are not taking that POV as a franchise. They are dedicated to maximizing regular season wins in any given season. The safe bet as a fan is that Cousins or Rodgers opens the season as the starter.

 

But...but... but.... if Howard starts Steelers will have no loosing season

Steelers can't have any more "loosing" seasons. Last one we had... we were able to draft a franchise QB.

It's a Pimply Dan tribute. I wasn't here to witness his genius years ago.... but the dude is considered a legend by many. I'll take their word for it. Kinda like SDOT with his epic, relentless hatred of Harrison and Steelers front office.

 

Are you saying the old guy versions of Gannon and Manning were better than the old-guy versions of Rodgers and Cousins? I'm not sure that is true. Manning didn't even start half the time the year the Broncos won it all.

If you are comparing those guys overall, Rodgers was a hell of a lot better than Gannon.

 

Maybe I am not remembering correctly. I believe Gannon was the league MVP and led the league in passing. He managed to totally meltdown in the SB. But, I still would argue he had a far better season than Rodgers has recently.

I did not clarify, that Manning was immobile. I should have.

Brady also led the league in passing towards his last hurrahs in Tampa Bay.

So I can revise: Rodgers and Manning are on one end of the old HOF QB spectrum. Brady is on the other. Gannon is hard to compare because he is not the caliber of the others over his entire career.

No matter how you want to slice it up, betting on Rodgers to have a great season is about as likely as Howard succeeding.

 

And he never even played a snap in the preseason.

The injury meant that it was a red-shirt year for him unless Rodgers and Mason both went down (and even then maybe we make an in season trade for some vet).

 

Does that lean towards bullet passers who maybe can't use touch? A touch pass will take longer to get to WR, but NFL requirement. I may have read it wrong.

 

While they can, it's probably the worst possible use of a "helmet" a team can do
