Joey Porter Jr Contract

When I first saw the opening post, knee jerk reaction was “no way”. But in looking at some of the information put out in the responses - gotta say I figure that number ends up being about accurate.

 

It is what the market is. If they want to have a good corner, they are going to have to pay him.

Obviously I am in the Porter Sr/Jr. Fan club.

 

Why do fans care what a player makes? Is JPjr an elite CB in the NFL? Yes. Pay him his market value. It really is just that simple.

 

And he still doesn’t get interceptions

 

I was also thinking / hoping it would end up being lower.

My gut was something like $27.5MM / year. And it's possible (but I think low) if it's a 4 year deal.

I just don't want to see a $32mm/year 4 year deal. If he had a probowl / all pro, then I think maybe that would make sense.

 

The debate is whether JPJ is in fact a high end CB. SIS had him ranked 67th in the NFL. He was 12th best in yds/tgt and 6th best in comp % allowed (min. 25 tgts).

So you ask the question why was his overall ranking so low? SIS heavily weights # of targets and INTs and Porter didn't get them. He wasn't targeted as often as some of the higher ranked CBs. And he's only had one INT each season. He also has had relatively fewer tackles than many better CBs. That is the problem with ranking that position. If you don't see the ball come your way that often it's tough to accumulate stats. But JPJ is clearly the best CB the Steelers have on the roster and the only one that can play press man with any competency.

MMC isn't bashful about drafting top DB's.

 

He drops more than he catches.

 

He has a different game script .He intends to score the Football and he intends to play from the lead , or at least a faster pace game ..

On Offense more WR sets and more attacking right down the seams a quicker approach to score if you will ...This changes the approach of the other Offense they feel a sense of urgency and tend to lean more towards the passing game ..

So the value of the positions are much different under this Mike .. He values WR'S and DB'S much higher than our old Mike.. The style that they play is much different as well...

IMO if we get more talent at WR and AR comes back we can win a few more regular season games and increase our playoff seed ..

Good points here. Tomlin's approach of 'slowing the game down' just caused them more problems when they got behind with teams that had actual offenses. The game against CIN two seasons ago was very telling when Tomlin said 'it's not the kind of game we like to play'. What's wrong with scoring in the first quarter? What's wrong with taking more chances with deep balls early in games, where if there's an INT it's not as damaging?

 

It's like the Steelers are in the Rocky concept and wants to be in a slug fest and then knock them out in the end .. The problem is if the opponent just keeps jabbing the Rocky concept works directly against us.. We are tired and spent and the opponent has their best punches still left to throw..

The regular season is the early rounds the playoffs are the truth telling rounds , we all see how that has went..

McCarthy won’t be able to play this style you’ve assumed he prefers without a trigger man. He could do it with prime Rodgers and prime Dak.

It wasn’t a coaching philosophy. It was getting torched in the playoffs.

 

AR was still throwing great IMO...2 dropped balls at costly times in the playoff game..2 bad routes on deep balls than landed exactly where the WR should have ran his route ..By the way 1 of those was 50 plus yards ..He zipped a ball to Pat and it was like a 105 MPH fast ball he couldn't even pick it up ..

AR can still throw the Football , he needs people who can actually get open and catch and understands how to run a route correctly...

 

When the Steelers had the horses, that’s how they played. They employed an OC whose mantra was “no risk it, no biscuit”.

They loaded up on WRs annually. They threw deep early and often. They tossed home run balls on third downs. They threw to convert late game clock draining first downs.

Steelers message boards were chock full of complaints.

 

Sorry, but this sort of excuse making for Rodgers is exactly what I tried to poke fun at earlier.

Sure he can still throw far. Big deal. He can no longer play high level NFL QB.

He had the same struggles on three teams and three or four coaches at this point.

The idea that he’s not the issue is laughable.

 

Dan Marino,Jim Kelly Brett Favre did not retire because they could no longer throw the football, they retired because they could no longer protect themselves from 300 pd lineman and 240 pd lbs that run a 4.5 forty. Hence AR checking down all the time.

 

He was ranked 14th.last year with probably the worse WR room ever assembled and a OC and Coach that hated using the middle of the field until they had to..

Fair Question ? If we upgrade the WR room and we will ,we change the method of attack and we will, do you think AR will play better or worse ?

 

Okay i agree , but he had to because hardly anybody could get open and when they did they probably dropped it ..Why hold it and get beat to death for no reason ? He played smart got us into a playoff game , a magical year if you ask me..

 

And turns out that a CB not getting targeted means the CB is doing a good job (or at least a better job than the other CBs on the team).

This is why I think it was crazy when all the talk was about how Ramsey was going to come in and be CB1.

In 3 years, Porter has given up 1 TD per pff. That was when he was a rookie.

He's a very good CB IMO.

I think it's also important to remember that AAV isn't really a measure of how good a guy is relative to other people at his position. It's a measure of (1) how recently they signed a contract and (2) how much the cap has inflated since other deals were signed.

If we can extend Porter, I think it's pretty likely that he'll be in the top 5 CBs by AAV . Until other people sign after him. Right now, the to 2 by AAV are Gardiner and Stingley (essentially both at $30mm/year). Then it drops to Horn / Ramsey / Surtain who are between $24MM - $25mm. (OTC)

Looks like both Gardiner (4 year extension) and Stingley (only 3 years if I'm reading OTC correctly) both signed in 2025. So did Horn (he's 27). I assume that when OTC gives years, it's for new years (since extensions often happen when a player has 1 year left on their previous contract).

Ramsey's deal is from 2024 and so is Surtain's. In 2024, the cap was $255.4MM. It was $279.2MM (~ 9.3% increase). It's projected to be ~ $305MM this season (another 9.3% from 2025 or ~ 19.5% from 2024).

If I'm doing math right (always a gamble!):

• Inflating those ~ $24.5MM contracts from 2024 cap dollar to 2026 cap dollars would be $29.3MM.
• Inflating Horn's ~ $24.5MM contract from last year to 2026 would be $26.8MM. <- This is where I'd really like to be.
• Inflating the ~ $30MM contracts from last season to 2026 would be $32.8MM.

I think at (or greater than) ~$33MM will be us overpaying. Getting him below $27MM would be a good deal by the team IMO.

I hope we can get him on the equivalent of the Horn extension.

If I'm the team, this is the deal that I'm pointing to. Although it's a bit of a different case. Horn was a 1st round pick, so he was only extended after year 4. He didn't make the PB in any of his first 3 years (like Porter). But he did make it in his 4th year (before the contract was signed).

So maybe the team points to this and says Porter should get a little less. No probowl. Less INTs despite Horn playing a bunch fewer games.

But Porter's agent points to it and says he should get this deal (or more) inflated with the cap. That he's on pace to make a PB in year 4. Porter looks like he has better stats (except INTs) in the first 3 years. In part because Porter has played almost every game for us and Horn played 22 games in his first 3 years.

 

He doesn't get a lot of interceptions because he'd have to let go of someones shirt to catch the ****ing ball.

Look at how the last year in GB went. Look at the Jets tenure. The method of attack wasn’t a Steelers determined thing. It was a physically limited old QB thing.

It’s how old QBs play. There’s no scheme adjustment.

The only remaining piece is the sooner the Steelers do Porter’s deal, the cheaper it will be in the long run.

As other CBs do contracts, there are more comparable contracts signed against a rising cap. The number will just go up and up.
