I'd like to think the owners hired the best coaches for the job, regardless of pigmentation - as it should be.

Age is something that cannot be controlled.

However, to say that is a disqualifying factor is simply untrue. Age is meaningless should that person be competent, skilled and possess the merit required. Hire the people based on the aforementioned atrributes.

Never hire for, and again, factors that they themselves cannot control.

NFL has always been big on nepotism. If Tomlin put his kid on staff a lot of fans on here would be livid and point out how it was favoritism and not nepotism.

The reality is most people who yap about DEI have no problem when a person who doesn’t have experience gets a job if the person looks like them.

Most NFL coaches fail and a lot of them fail miserably. This idea that the best man always gets the job is simply untrue.

Look at Stefanski and the way he gets praised on here simply because he won 1 playoff game for the Browns and he wasn’t even at the game.

I’m not saying Stefanski is a bad coach. But if he looked like Tomlin I wonder if he would get the same praise or even another shot to coach. I give him 2 years.. maybe 3 in ATL.

Face it folks.. a lot of you who complain about DEI simply hated seeing people of a different color in leadership positions because they were given a chance to prove themselves. But at the same time, you have no problem with podcasters and tv host replacing highly educated people and people getting chances simply because their daddy and their daddy’s daddy were coaches.

The best thing to be in the NFL is "former NFL Coach" it is almost always a pathway to being employed in the NFL for life. Just keep getting hired through some combination of favors owed and the fact that it is a closed network.

The idea that NFL coaching hires are based on merit or ability is comical.

Actually the idea that hiring anywhere at anytime is based on merit and ability is laughable.

I dunno. I've had like a dozen or so jobs over my life. In none of them was merit and ability the only factor in hiring. Sure...I had the base qualifications and experience....but so did everyone else in the applicant pool. It was usually some combination of personal networks, availability, what I was willing to accept as conditions of the assignment, etc...but not merit and ability alone.

I’ve had a dozen or so jobs

I got them because I was really good at what I did

And I’m sociable and interview well

I hired an awful lot of the people over the years and everyone was hired solely because I thought they were the best person for the job

We must live in different worlds

good points. I am also good at what I do. But every time I have been up for one position or the other....that is table stakes.

It comes down to the interview connections like you mentioned (people like to hire those they think will be their friends) and what professional/personal networks you can bring to bear on the situation.

I've had jobs where the boss hired me sight unseen because someone he trusted vouched that I could do the job.

You have to have the baseline qualifications...but after that? It is a crapshoot. Of course, each individuals' mileage may vary.

For the NFL specifically, I don't think much matters besides who you know and if you are available when the spot comes open.

If you have good friends, you have them for a reason. Nobody knows you quite the way your close friends do.
