So Long Danny Smith

I think he was pretty good at generating pressures on FGs and Punts. Seems like we'd often block one or two a year.

But it seems like we've been pretty bad at returns for a while.

We had a lot of good moments with Danny Smith, but a few major screwups too. He was more of an iconic coach who was loved by the fans rather than a top of his field coach. I was not on the 'get rid of him' train, but I am also not sad to see him go.

 

Punt and kick off returns has been one of my big gripes in our games. We were consistently returning it about 5 to 8 yards less than whatever team we were playing.

 

The Steelers will save on equipment with all of these moves. They won't need to have 30 defibrillators on the sideline any longer just in case one of their many geriatric coaches or players needs to use one.......lol

Agree. Funny, when Kaleb Johnson had that huge mistake early on in the year for not knowing the Kickoff Rules, everyone pointed to Tomlin for Kaleb's mistake, and I was thinking, wouldn't this be more Danny Smith's job to teach his players the rules of the game?

Johnny does bad in Math, are you going to go blame the Principal of the school, or are you going to blame the Math teacher for not helping Johnny with his Math Problems?

Danny Smith will be missed because he was a fan favorite for his gum chewing.

 

IMHO he did a great job and I give he a lot of credit for leaving the Steelers organization.

 

Good for him, but my take is that special teams coaches who never advance past special teams coach aren't anything special.
Maybe he found his niche and had no desire to advance, but usually real good coaches want a new challenge

 

He’s making six figures doing a fairly stress free job in the nfl

He seems to have fun doing it

Basically the same job for 25 years

the irony is at one point he was the most hated unit coach in pittsburgh...and then one day that changed where he became one of the most liked out if the unit coaches...lol

but the biggest irony of all is did his units really improve that much or did the other units start to get that bad?
