    My overall football value chart.

What really matters towards winning? Football is the ultimate team game and every part matters. But some matter more than others. If I high light the spot, we need improvement here.

Enclosed is JB's chart on what matters the most to the least in the current NFL teams.

    Tier one:

    1. Quarterback. There are about six very good QB's. Franchise QB's. About six to eight good qb's and the rest not good playoff starters or are too new to rate ( say about 18 starts ). If you want to win a super bowl, you best have a very good one in his prime. Yes-- Flacco and Johnson won a superbowl, but they had one heck of the team around tem and this brings me to #2A and #2B

2A. Head coach. This man runs the team, is responsible for giving the players an edge, exploiting favorable matchups, putting together a good staff of coaches, making critical 4th down decisions, and strategy, logistics, and execution. If football is the 100 yard war, the head coach is the general.

2B. General Manager. Surprised? This man has a huge say in the draft, managing salary cap decisions, giving out good 2nd and 3rd contacts, and plugging various roster holes, making good trades, etc.. He often has the final say on hiring and firings.
These spots should be judged in a three year window and if not top 14 in the NFL is priority one to replace.

The Super Bowl winner typically has 3 very good to excellent guys here.

    Tier two

    4. Left Tackle. There is no such thing as a final four team who has a starting left tackle that is not at least average. This is why the best ones make a lot of money. Good tackles seldom leave their team in their primes.

    5. Pass Rusher. The key man on a defense. If you have a very good one, he gets a good 2nd and 3rd contract offers.

    6. #1 Wide Receiver. This spot has moved up a notch or two in terms of overall importance. The Rules of the game favor them, and they have a long shelf life the Running backs. For whatever reason this position has more divas than any other.

    7. #1 Cornerback. Modern coaching stresses not to risk many interceptions, as the way the game is officated limits the impact of this position.

    8. Defensive tackle / Nose tackle. A player who 1 ) shuts down the runs and 2 ) is always on the field for third downs.

#9 Running back. The best ones today are dual threats as runners or pass catchers. But they don't have long football primes.

#10 Owner. I have a saying. You can not fire the owner! He hires the head coach and the GM. He can not be too tightfisted with non salary cap player benefits, must care about winning enough, and isn't a meddlesome in operations. He needs to know who is supposed to do what and should be active with his upper staff in private. In my opinion this person should not be involved in politics aside from giving to the community. Teams can only hope and pray for a good owner. This spot is basically locked up for a long, long time.

All of these spots with the exception of Owner should be high priority on draft day because acquiring a very good one in free agency is often costly.

    Tier three

    Three down linebacker
    Right Tackle
    Center
    Tight End
    Offense Coordinator
    Defensive Line #2
    Safety #1
    Wide receiver #2
    Cornerback #2
    Safety #2
    Defensive Coordinator.

    Tier 4

    Nickelback / corner #3
    Defensive line #3
    Linebacker #2
    Linebacker #3
    Guard #1
    Wide receiver #3
    Kicker
    Defensive line #4
    Guard #2

    Tier 5

    Quarterback #2
    Defensive back #4
    Kick returner
    Offensive line reserve
    Linebacker #4
    Wide Receiver #4
    Putner
    Defensive special teams guy
    Fullback
    Long Snapper

Tier 6 everyone else not listed.

** I have the right to edit this list. Good feedback is welcome.

We are getting a new head coach! And with him comes a NEW OC and DC. Very excited. :applaud:

Now if we focus on the above needs, and ask ourselves where we stand at each spot, matching value with need on draft day we can turn things around in 1 to 2 years.

Good list. I'd put kicker much higher. Maybe even in tier 2. This guy usually scores the most points on the team and a good kicker can usually be directly attributed to winning 5 games a year or so. On the flip side, he can also lose games for you ala Tyler Loop.
