Would a coffee filter allow oils to seep through, or would it just gum up the filter???

Allspice Dram is technically a spiced rum. But the final result is more like a liqueur. It has a very strong spiced character, it's sweet and the taste is reminiscent of Christmas cookies. Not quite gingerbread, but in that ballpark. The version I made is simple: Navy Strength rum, whole allspice and brown sugar.... with a little water to proof it down. It finished around 70 proof. It's a common ingredient in tiki drinks and some specialty fall / winter cocktails.

I only made it because there isn't a single brand available in PA. And I wasn't planning on going out of state any time soon. And I needed it to make milk punch. ;)

I'll let Alton Brown explain that one to you:

After a little googling the oils dissolve in vodka. So no the coffee filter wouldn’t have a negative affect

Ok. I was just wondering. I used to back in the day do a certain let's say herb this way, and I would have to change out the filter constantly because it got all gummed up when making a certain tea.

    Well, damn.

There's various different recipes. But in basic, milk punch is a combination of alcohol (the recipe I want to try involves, Earl Grey tea, rum, port, and allspice dram), sugar and acid (lemon juice, lime juice ,etc). You then use whole milk to clarify it. You literally curdle the milk intentionally with the boozy mixture. The curdled proteins in the milk from something like a mesh to remove off flavored compounds and leave behind something rather silky after filtering out the good, clear liquid. What's left is as shelf stable as a strong wine.

For history buffs, it was a popular drink among our founding fathers. The concept is centuries old.

That sounds dreadful. I had bar customer once that ordered peppermint schnapps and 7up. For years ive thought that sounded like the worst combo in history. Somehow you’ve managed to surpass that

    It's actually delicious.
    LoL.
My cousins used to make fun of it all the time back in the day, because I'd show up with a gallon of milk, and a bottle of Southern Comfort, and one day they took a drink , and was like , dang that taste way better than it sounds. Like I said, I'd still drink it, but my belly doesn't do it anymore, and I tried with soy milk, but it breaks it down wrong.
