I just got my checking account emptied out.
Apparently, someone skimmed or hacked my wife’s debit/credit card.
We diligently check our accounts online everyday. Found it today.
Credit union already credited our money back, while the case is being investigated.
Wife said she got gas and paid at pump last night. Odds are there was a skimmer attached to pump.
Be safe everyone! Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours!

Had it happen to us a couple years ago. Thankfully, the bank caught it quickly.

Best advice? Don't use your debit card for anything! Only ATM transactions. Use a credit card for everything else. Most will alert you and ask if the purchase is legit if it's suspicious. And if you reject it, you're covered. Had my card hacked a while back (bought something online that must have been a shady site or they had bad security, 2 days later, someone tried using my card to buy what I can only assume was a state of the art, maxed out gaming PC with triple monitors). The instant the order was made, we got a notification asking for verification.

The only inconvenience there was waiting on a new card.

(The downside is i can't buy ANYTHING without my wife instantly knowing. :lolol:)

You do know they are emptying atms at an alarming rate right now, using cell phones.
Bottom line is to keep a daily check on your accounts
Also, my credit union usually calls me about fraudulent transactions. In this case it was 6 in a row. This is what disappointed me

Just a pain in the arse updating all your bill collectors

I keep the bare minimum in my checking account. I check it every morning before work.

Thanks for the heads up, top notch guys!

Sorry this happened to you but glad you found it early and your CU made it good for you. I got caught with a Target Store hack a few years ago on a credit card I rarely used but wanted to show some use before they cancelled it. The perps charged all kinds of stuff over a few days from all over the world and even made a donation to Feed America, I guess to make it look legit. The Card company contacted me and did take away all these charges which was good but because there was a "charitable contribution" I got on a junk mail list for literally dozens of other charities who hounded me for months until I faked a letter from an attorney and sent it to each charity (probably managed by one entity) and threatened an IRS forensic audit of their accounting for all donation receipts and expenditures unless they stopped their repetitive solicitation practices immediately. It worked and the letters stopped. Based on this as well as a similar experience with a legit donation I made to a Veterans group for a buddy of mine, sadly, I will never again donate to a charity where they know who I am and have contact info for me. It's one of the biggest scams out there where they immediately sell your info and make extra money that way.
