This covers the birth of Blitzburgh and the maturation of the 3-4 zone blitz under Lebeau that eventually redefined defense in Pittsburgh. To run it successfully two main ingredients are necessary. The first is 4 linebackers who can flat out play, the second is smart and talented players on defense who understand what's required of them.

This one is a breakdown of the 2008 AFC championship game and its one of the most informative I have ever seen in dealing with scheme and plays. Again it shows what made the Steelers signature 3-4 work and made them perhaps one of the best defenses of the modern era.

If you want to know why the defense looks tired and old or why teams seem to have it solved this will explain all. This shows that not only are they missing 4 stud linebackers to run it, they lack smart and talented players on defense who know their job. Too many cowboys, to many rovers, too many guys looking for highlight reel plays instead of doing their job.

I was watching the 2005 Steelers/Bengals extended highlights the other day. It didn't have the tutorial moments, but the difference between then and now was stark. Like you mention, it's not about individual players playing hero ball. It's a terrifically nuanced scheme with players knowing and performing their roles, and the hero plays coming as a result of the unit acting as one.

I've criticized ours as being too player-dependent for awhile now.

That first video almost brought tears to my eyes. Those were the days, and illustrates that you need superb talent and creative minds behind them to achieve greatness.

And the nicknames!!! We need a team good enough to create nicknames!
