I knew we were in trouble when they interviewed Tomlin at halftime on the sideline and he said that we had to stop the run and never mention about Bengals receivers setting records for targets and completions, and not changing things up.

It has become painfully obvious Tomlin and Austin know squat about defense and/ or adjustments.

    See definition of insanity.

We saw the bad version of Queen again last night. The poor tackle was part of it, but he got lost in coverage far too often. Flacco fooled him badly on the touchdown pass to Fant.

He was right. Chase and Higgins were going to make plays. Allowing the Bengals to run and failing to pressure Flacco turned a difficult defensive night into a losing one.

The predictable defense continues. Not that it mattered what they tried, they didnt do any better in zone either.

Seriously though, has there ever been another team with so many players on other teams saying how predictable and easy it is to defend them.

All goes back to his we’re going to do what we’re going to do philosophy. He’s too stubborn to admit that Chase is far too talented to approach that way and won’t scheme him out of the game. Just hat an hat, beat the man across from you mentality.

Or maybe Bradshaw is right, he’s more a cheerleader than X’s and O’s guy.

Jalen was brought in for this very reason. A man-to-man cover corner, future HOF!! Problem is that he’s older, a bit slower, a little less quick. He would probably, at this stage of his career, be a FS! Can he still play man to man, sure, but against lesser talent than Chase & Higgins. He’s also not quick enough to play against most slot receivers .

Austin AND Tomlin plays him EVERYWHERE. This also creates a problem.

We couldn’t stop the Run worth a dang!! They lost gap integrity, Benton was a liability and tackling sucked.

Austin is a bad DC and has been, nothing new. They held onto bad OL coaches too long, bad OC too long. This is nothing new.

No, he lived in his fear. So blinded by it he couldn’t see the obvious. The bangles knew what they were going to do and played accordingly!!

Go back to the HOF game when Cowher was inducted. Tomlin let him call a few defensive plays and Bill remarked something like: man nothing has changed.

It's an old tired defensive scheme that need revamped or replaced.

I usually stay out of most conversations, and I will probably regret posting this, but I just looked up Teryl Austin's history. Granted, it's from Wikipedia, but I am actually starting to really wonder if the DCs, since LeBeau, really are basically figureheads for Tomlin. Below is the part on Austin that I copied.

"On January 11, 2018, it was announced that Austin had been hired as the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.[15] On November 12, 2018, Teryl Austin was relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator after the Bengals defense became the first in NFL history to give up 500+ yards in 3 straight games, against the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New Orleans Saints, respectively.

On January 8, 2019, it was announced that Austin had been hired as the Senior Defensive Assistant/Secondary for the Pittsburgh Steelers.[16] On February 9, 2022 he was promoted as the defensive coordinator for the Steelers after the retirement of Keith Butler.[17]"

And then comments from players like Heyward being pissed about the DL not doing their job, being out of place, etc, etc. As a 'casual' fan, as in I don't know all the X's and O's of the game, it seems to be the same thing year in and year out lately, no matter what players they put out there.

Good point. And now Minnesota has the best pass defense in the league.

he coaches players instead of coaching football. it won't change until he's gone. he got set on being some type of defensive guru in his mind and nobody can tell him any different. he won a super bowl as DC in tampa and won one here and lost one so he knows best even though those teams were built before he got there and had little to do with it. he had many players in place while going to those super bowls. most of the reason he likes vet players. they do most of the work he can't do but thinks he can. he does what he knows and can take in no further.

One thing that I have never really been clear on. Just how much input does Tomlin have on the defense? I know that Austin is calling most of the shots during the game, but what about practice too? Is Tomlin pushing the plan and then on game day, Austin calls the plays that are essentially handed to him by Tomlin? Or is Austin really the man in charge?

Opponent's points per game by year:

    2005 16.0 LeBeau SB win
    2006 19.7 LeBeau WC loss
2007 16.8 LeBeau Tomlin become HC, WC loss
    2008 13.9 LeBeau SB win
    2009 20.3 LeBeau
    2010 14.5 LeBeau SB loss
    2011 14.2 LeBeau WC loss
    2012 19.6 LeBeau
    2013 23.1 LeBeau
    2014 23.0 LeBeau WC loss
    2015 19.9 Butler Div loss
    2016 20.4 Butler Conf loss
    2017 19.3 Butler Div loss
    2018 22.5 Butler
    2019 18.9 Butler
    2020 19.5 Butler WC loss
    2021 23.4 Butler WC loss
    2022 20.4 Austin
    2023 19.1 Austin WC loss
    2024 20.4 Austin WC loss
    2025 23.3 Austin

Compared to several other teams I looked at, the Steelers are not bad in PPG by opponents. The difference is that we are fairly consistent and haven't had that really good year that propels the team upward for a long time. The last time we did was in 2010 and 2011.

Steelersdepot was trying to create the narrative that Tomlin is 22-6 against rookie QB’s. Um, no, that was primarily Dick LeBeaus doing. And wouldnt you know, since he left, 4 more losses to rookie QBs. Tomlin had nothing to do with that winning record. Just more coattail riding.

He does own the no losing season record, I’ll give him that but it just backs up my feelings which is he is a good regular season HC but his flaws get exposed in the postseason against better competition/coaching.
