    just like the talk of drafting the next qb when ben was still playing well. they have done that with these OLB'ers. are these guys going to sit for 4 years and play spot duty while watt and highsmith play out these years? or let him play it out, franchise him next year and let the new guard take it's place earlier than thought? tough call. :cool:

    That reminds me when Warren Spahn was expecting a big raise after winning 21 games in 1961 but didn't receive a raise at all. He told the Braves GM "But I won 21 games!" The Braves GM said "Yeah but you lost 13 so you really only won 8 games."

    No new contract. Let him play out current deal this season. Franchise next year if you need to and then cut bait. Spend the money on the O.

    THIS goes back to Tomlin's philosphy and Colberts last handful of drafts.

    Colbert drafted so many projects and reaches and misses, its ugly. Before that run of bad drafts, we had GOOD depth and talent. Having like 5 drafts and only a couple of yearly starters out of like 30 picks did in the depth chart, limiting any ability to sub out more frequently to keep players fresher in the early 2020s.

    Tomlin's stupid, idiotic, cowardly gamplan, to keep it close and win every game late (sound good if it works 14 games a season) doesn't allow for any mass fourth quarter substitutions. Remember the 3 or 4 or 5 games a year under Cowher (and early Tomlin years with good OC/DCs) when we'd have a 20 point lead early in the fourt quarter and had a handful of vets cooling on the bench, high-fiving and helmets off? Yeah, its been a LONG time since we had ONE game like that.

    Tomlin told Haley he'd only need this many points to win and I think I read it was usually around or sub-20 points, we'll you ain't resting anyone only being up one score or one TD and FG score early in the fourth. Tomlin is a hypocrite, stating "we don't live in our fears" when he obviously does. He won't take risks and attempt to blowout teams with possibly occasional risky play-calling, he'd rather 3-and-out half the drives and get four or five FGs the other half and hope the defense can bend but not break in the fourth.

    I miss blowing out other teams. It's sad when went from being feared to being overlooked every week. The DC of other teams doesn't have to give much thought to the gamplan vs Steelers, they can start prepping for the following week when an aggressive HC and OC come rolling into town. Partly because they know their own OC/HC will try to score a TD every drive, not run, run, bubble-screen or throw it 5 yard short of the sticks on 3rd down.

    We need him this year, if he's mostly healthy. I just don't like the idea of paying him big money for his big downturn the next few years. The corpse of TJ will be getting maybe 5 or 6 sacks the whole season and get run on relentlessy the final two years of the deal.

    I assume the hold up is Steelers are wisely offering 3 years max and he wants 4 and all guaranteed at that. If it's 4 that last year better be chump change and not guarteed or the last two heavily performance based (ie snaps played, total sacks at respectable level for additional $5 million each and bas salary of say $15-20 million).

    I fixed it for ya. I feel like he has another good season or two in him, but not four or five (say a 4 year extension). I can see pushing all in now, but when we're cap-strapped and Watt is a part-time player with little production in two years, remember these thoughts you and others are having.

    WE need Watt this year, assuming he's 95% healthy, I fully agree. We don't need an overpayed, broken-down Watt taking up 40 million in cap space in 2027 and beyond.

    Here is the fact check on that thought:

    Sept = 24 sacks (23 gms)
    Oct = 23 sacks (26 gms)
    Nov = 23.5 sacks (28 games)
    Dec = 29 sacks (38 gms)
    Jan = 8.5 sacks (6 gms)

    Well since Tomlin averages 10.5 wins a year, maybe some of those other teams should take him more seriously. :shrug:

    Ya I hear you but it’s just hard to think of TJ in another uniform. He is still a top LB. I agree they should not pay him a Mikah size contract but they should give him something not to far below him. Although, the Cowboys will probably over pay Mikah. They are known for doing that no doubt.
