I mentioned the injury and maybe coming back too soon...if so, it was a bad choice. It's one thing to gut it out if we have nothing else, but if you're at 20% your normal effort, even a mediocre backup is better. Watt really hurt our D the last few games. He was invisible, no impact.

I wonder if its one of those injuries that will slow him down moving forward...maybe not, but I'd hate to have him eat up 20% of the cap and be below-average. Risky as all get out.

We've seen the best of Watt, at his age, players that rely on speed as much as anything deteriorate rapidly. He's strong, he can still be...good, but I don't think DPOY level good is on the horizon. To pay him like that would be BAD business...and crushing on the cap and ability to keep better, younger players.

I hope he signs, for a REASONABLE high paid deal, for maybe 2 or 3 years (MAX).

I think he’s earned a nice contract. What the numbers are or should be I don’t know. If we wait too long we might have to pay him too much. If Micah gets a massive contract before we pay TJ, if we do, then he’ll want more than Micah. He’s a better LB than Micah IMO. I think we should keep him but he’s probably over them not giving him what he wants and I don’t blame him. He’s been all we have in the past 7 years. All that said he is getting older so I kind of understand why they are a little reluctant to give him a massive contract. Again I think he’s earned it.

 

The side of me that has become disgusted with the money being paid out in sports, says let him go. I can remember feeling the same way about Woodson.

OT contracts, namely Fully Guaranteed Money, will no doubt explode in 2026. As we debated before, Dan Moore Jr was the catalyst. Not the highest paid but a changing of the times.


If Tyler Smith of the Dallas Cowboys has an All Pro season like I believe he will, the OT market is gonna explode.

Just talking age and future potential, YES.

In order to make an honest choice ask again in 3-5 years.

 

The Steelers would be fools to think they need to give Watt more than Micah, Micah is 5-6 years younger than Watt.

 

Part of the reason that Watt fades at the end of every season is that he plays every down like his hair is on fire. He is dominant early on in the year and racks up a lot of sacks and splash plays. But he just wears down and can't keep up that intensity all season.

 

In my life time of watching the Steelers, very few 3rd contracts are given by the Steelers. Players must be HOF
material for the third contract.. Ask Peazy, Harrison, Faneca who actually made the HOF.
I also thought Cam Heyward was done, but look how he played last year, I believe TJ Watt will finish his career a Steeler.

 

People need to realize that this defense is entirely different with TJ on the field. The man is a Hall of Famer. He is a captain of this team now. He is the Alpha dawg.

You'd simply be dumb to get rid of him unless someone is giving 3 1st round picks and then some.

Bruce Smith was a stud far beyond 30. I'm making TJ retire a Steeler.

 

The number itself is not as important as the guaranteed bucks, they could put a 50 million per year designation out there, and most of that could be bogus bucks that do not count for squat if he retires/gets cut after a certain time. The highest paid designation is BS in itself, hell he got that once, do you need that swell of pride for the 15 seconds it takes until the next guy comes along? odds are more likely than not he will get signed, structured in a way they can have the void years to ride it out, we just came out of Cap hell period from those type of things that really can hamper a teams operation in the future. It happens and will continue to be standard practice around the league, and the CAP going up will off set some of that, but sure gives a heartburn seeing guys getting 'paid' (on the books) years after they are gone and the team has nothing to show for it, in our case literally nothing for a decade.

 

The reports were that they were some calls about TJ, and they were not taken seriously. How much is true is total speculation, if a team offered 3 firsts and more, from a business perspective you have to look at it, I seriously doubt he has that much value on the market, you are not going to get a TJ again in this generation, but with that much capitol you can sure make moves to get your next QB. After the dust clears a deal is likely done, but the business side still has to be looked at.
