I get what you are saying, but in this years dollars it's basically a swap Minkah for Ramsey, as Thor said it's how they try and work out the rest of his contract that will be interesting. It may be a giant hail mary when the season is over, but this is definitely a different team than last year...have no idea how it will work, but they are not sitting this year out waiting on drafting a QB next year, this is as much 'all in' as I have seen from the Steelers.

But Ramsey is likely to be more versatile in the secondary playing slot CB, outside CB and some safety.

Few weeks ago, the big story was that the FO was trying to trade for Jonnu Smith. Today, he’s just an afterthought in a bigger trade. I like how this FO operates. Let’s hope it works out

Heyward is as good as gone. Smith will probably put all talks about a WR2 free agent signing to bed also

They do keep us in it. I golf with a few NYG fans and they pretty much lost interest early last few seasons.

The media's starting to make me feel like DiCaprio in The Aviator over the blueprints.

I don't get where they're getting their numbers. Even Spotrac has Ramsey's hit to the Steelers estimated at $5.3M this season.

The story is being spun as a blockbuster trade but I don’t see it. Minkah has not been Minkah for several years. Ramsey is 30, and with defensive backs it is the law of the Serengeti, half a step slower and you are out of the league. Jonnu Smith will be on his fifth team.
Minkah and Ramsey may not even be on their rosters a year from now.
I just doubt that this will be that significant of a move in the long haul.

Stories now coming out the perhaps it was Fitz, and not Sutton, that was the ire of players about 'miscommunications' last season

Steelers run a ton of 13 personnel. They need 3 TEs. Unless you meant which TE would be split out wide? That would be Smith.

wow. I have mixed feelings here...but I do like the idea that the team is going all out. But am I wrong? What does Jalen have left in the tank? It's not 2018.

Like going into a pawn shop and saying: "how much for this chain saw?" $50. How much will you throw in this axe for? $5. Look around for a bit..."well, I will just take the $5 axe then"....and walk out with the axe that was really what you wanted........lol

I think that this has the potential to be a very good trade for us.

Jonnu is very similar to Friermuth on last year's stats. A bit better IMO. He also has 2 fumbles to Friermuth's 3 (2nd most on team, wilson was 1st with 4). Smith has 33 more targets and a 79% catch rate, Friermuth has an 83%. Both have a 10.0 yard average. Both are being very well paid (we now have what looks to be the #8 and 9 top paid TEs). I would expect to see both of these guys on the field together a lot. Financially and skill wise, we would be stupid to not use them often. This trade is a plus to our offense IMO.

On the defense, at the worst, I think that the trade is a wash. But comparing stats, Ramsey should be an upgrade to Fitzpatrick. The only spot where we are losing is that Fitzpatrick is an on the field leader. Someone else will have to step up.

Fitzpatrick gave a lot to the Steelers for 6 years. Sad to see him go, but time gets everyone in the end. I wish him the absolute best....except for on December 15th. That one day, he can stay home sick.

This assumes there was a large base salary the Steelers would want to buffer down over time via the signing bonus. But both OTC and Sportrac have Ramsey at a $1.25M base for 2025.

The more I think about it the more I like it. I was excited about the prospect of trading for Ramsey when the rumours first started a while back. They have added a versatile DB that can do anything you want in the secondary at a high level and a really good pass catching tight end.

I really like Minkah and will be sorry to see him gone but the reality is that you can find a player that’ll give you 80% of what he does for a quarter of the price. Paying safeties at the top of the market doesn’t really make sense any more, if it ever did.

We don’t know how this will all work out but you have to hand it to the front office, they are not afraid to make moves. Metcalf, and now this.

And I doubt they are done

As much as I like Minkah, they weren't getting good value out of the money they were spending having him at the position. It could be argued that there aren't a lot of safeties in the league that should command that kind of a price tag, but the Steelers weren't utilizing him in a way in which he could earn it, either.

If Trice makes the team that will give them three CBs at least 6'2 and 200lbs or more.

Agree, I think the drop off in splash plays was likely scheme. I dont buy the theory that he is to blame for the communication issues in a secondary with Trice, Bishop and Sutton and I do wonder if we will only see Minkahs true value when he is gone, but it probably came down to his contract ultimately.

    1. According to SIS Ramsey was the 12th best CB in the league last season
    2. ...... and Fitz was the 31st ranked safety

Steelers played 4th most Cover 3 in the league last season according to SD. With the players they have now this is an upgrade assuming Ramsey can take on the role of the safety in certain situations (he's the same size as Fitz). Cowher says it's a 'personality change' not necessarily a "scheme change" that the Steelers putting together.

Say what you want, but Tomlin's words at the end of last season have been validated ("there will be change"). The secondary including coach has been remade. It was clearly a problem at the end of the season last year and the team did something about it. The DL has been addressed via draft. You can't fault them for the plan. Remains to be seen if the results will follow.
