Sorry if you thought Clark was finally making sense. I didn't have room to type what he said right before that.

After Smith talks about the recent playoff performances, Clark says, "To me, the most telling piece about those games is the deficit that they faced in all of those playoff games. So what is that? Is that not being prepared. Is that not being talented enough? They have to find the answer, and I say this - I always say this, and people get mad at me - I believe the Mike Tomlin is unfireable. I believe if Mike Tomlin steps away from being the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, that that should be his decision. And I've said time and time again, I do believe that should be the decision he makes. I believe Mike Tomlin should coach in another organization.."

    "Why"

"Because I believe, as great a coach as he is, and he is a first ballot Hall-of-Famer, I believe his voice has run stale in Pittsburgh."

There you have it. Tomlin isn't getting the job done, but you should not be allowed to fire him.

What kind of logic is that?

Old RC is about 10 years too late on his comments.

i don't disagree. this is a results based business. for our owner, what results are they looking for? it surely isn't playoff wins. is it non losing seasons? is it more important that he is a minority and has the highest percentage of minority coaches on the staff in the NFL? is it ticket sales? what exactly makes him unfireable? tradition? longest tenure? where are the results? to fans it's like groundhog day the movie. for us older fans that lived through the 60's and then the 70's, we saw how great noll was to this organization and what it could be. that set the bar really high. tomlin nor cowher ever reached that status here. it's a tough pill to swallow. how long do they keep spinning their wheels like this?

This doesn't mean Tomlin is a bad coach, but at some point, when the results aren't there and progress isn't being made, sometimes a change and a breath of fresh air is very necessary, and it could be beneficial for the Steelers and also for Tomlin, just as it was for the Eagles and Andy Reid.

Stability is important but it's not the case if the results are mediocre and it's obvious that it won't change...similar to the Bengals with Marvin Lewis. They kept Lewis for like 10 years too long and the Steelers are not far from that with Tomlin

It is funny how often we go round and round with this. To me, a big part of the issue is having a complete and robust roster. That is hard to do when we didn’t find much success in the first round toward the end of Colbert’s tenure.

Then there is a more recent draft headed by Pickett and Pickens. Nobody really came out of that draft, another miss.

Tomlin deserve some blame for the bad draft too, since according to him(in 2013) he has responsibility in drafts....

The Steelers have been and probably will be, a 'promote from within' organization.
So once you are in the organization, you'll probably be there a long time.
I am obviously more angry with the Front Office than Tomlin.

If Tomlin can coach a team to 12 playoffs appearances in 18 years, but is 8-11
Someone is responsible for him and for decisions that make the changes to get the team over the top.
    or
Anointing him with super powers because he is 183-107-2 which is perceived as making him the Steelers most successful coach in history, despite Noll sitting there with 4 SB's, 4 SB wins and 4 rings and a Hall of Fame filled with his players.

Noll was instrumental in building those teams. If it is in fact Tomlin who's insisting on Blue Light Special players and Bargain basement coaches it is a totally different issue.

Personally I look at the aforementioned.
As an owner I have a come to Jesus meeting with coaching and Front Office."
"This guy has got us in the playoffs 12 of 18 years, I want some players that can get us over the top and I want the best staff.
Now with that fantasy moment over with.........

I had Ryan in Washington for a few years.
Sadly, he was one of the best players on the team those 3 years.
Joe Gibbs loved him and Clark and Taylor were a 'Legion of Doom' all on their own.
Had a few conversations with him. Felt bad for him there.

It's 2 fold........ you definitely need to have the players in place to execute the scheme...... you also need the coaches to develop said scheme to maximize the player's talents, whether it's the head, or position çoaches.....

i agree b&g. what we don't know and most assume is tomlin takes a lot away from position coaches to do it his way. we delete what tom arth can do by changing the whole qb room. maybe we should have kept rudolph and maybe then kyle allen. both would now have been under arth for a second season at this point. it would have also put them at a second season with smith as well. now you add howard and have two good but maybe not great QB's for him to learn with. they could be very beneficial in helping teach a young possibly next franchise qb. i do believe they were both very coachable type players. it wouldn't have cost them much to have kept both. i do think that is how you build this room into something viable. yet we change the whole room. if by chance rodgers comes in it breaks it down again into a start over situation. this makes arth's ability unknown.

let's go to the defensive side. tomlin has his stamp all over this side of the ball as well. DC is nothing more than a figure head. we have 4 and possibly 5 really good OLB'ers on this team. 3 of which will probably be standing on the sidelines. this defense is based on getting to the passer. when it fails, the defense fails. every year we see the same thing. an innovative coach would try to find a way to get maybe 3 of these guys on the field together from time to time. we have heard of this but never see it. again wasting these very capable players.

change from the we do what we do because of being afraid of giving up a big play has only worked to keep us at 500 or just above. we give up other aspects of the game to the other offenses. the run. the underneath passing game. the long drives. but it doesn't change. he keeps thinking players are the problem over scheme. if he won't change or give his coaches ability to change his style, is it really the position coaches fault?

i don't think we have a position coach problem, we have a mike tomlin problem. clark is pretty spot on. we also have an art2 problem causing a MT problem.

Tomlin deserves some blame for their recent drafts screw ups

Tomlin deserves most of the blame for their bad schemes, predicable schemes on defense and offense and his hard head when it comes to making changes with personnel and doing the same things over and over again. Not a good X and O coach.

Tomlin deserves most of the blame for poor clock management and red flag decisions.

Clark is a few years late with his Tomlin problem.

    I like that. Nice.

If a coach can get you there 12 of 18 seasons, there's an organizational problem.
    That organizational problem includes Tomlin.
Along with the QB, the HC is a lightning rod for criticisms. It's a circle of bad stuff.

Whomever is hiring, and retaining, morons like Canada, Austin, Meyer and others, is the problem. The blame invariably goes to the Deuce.

Weird how Tomlins old friends keep getting coaching positions with the Steelers. I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

Agreed, but look at how many of those so called 1st round picks went to other teams , and did worse. So where was the better coaching. Hell where is T. Edmunds, on his what 5th team, and some on here used to say I was being too hard on him, and I would think, what are You watching, or how about 1st round Bush...., or 1st round Pickett.....just those three 1st round picks are already on their 3rd, 4th, or 5th teams, and I haven't seen different coaching help them one single bit, In fact they look worse.
Someone please show me where these 1st round picks have gotten better with different coaching.

The O line has been a sh!t show since Pouncey, DeCastro, Villanueva and Foster left or retired... and Munchak moved on. Coaching is more to blame for this than drafting. Yeah, Kendrick Green was a bad pick... but sooner or later, coaching has to be held accountable.

That doesn't explain why most of those 1st round picks have gotten worse after they left. Again, Pickett, Bush, and T. Edmunds can't even keep a job. They've all gotten worse, under other coaches, and they were all 1st round picks, and we know 1st round picks get plenty of opportunities, even from teams that didn't pick them.

Bush, Edmunds... yeah, I agree. No way in hell was Pickett taking Jalen Hurts' job. That's not a fair comparison. Let's see how Pickett does vs 2 rookie QBs and Flacco with Browns QB competition.
