I don't really think it's outrageous to expect them to put some thought into what COULD happen if they don't give him a 2nd round tender.

Pretty much ANY offer is going to be an offer that it's hard for them to match, considering the cap situation. Even if the Pats were offering a long term deal it would likely still carry at least 4 mil against the cap this season (because they have the room and we don't).

If they wanted to sign him to a longterm deal, just do it. Why get in this situation and let another team dictate how much you pay a player? Also, if they match it they're basically admitting they lowballed him versus what they were really willing to pay him... Could make extending him next offseason harder.

Ok got it...I didnt know what the $$ was for the 3rd rd tender....1.5m...Really what i was asking (not so clearly lol) was if he was allowed to turn down an offer or was he obligated to take it as long as it was over the tender...but you answered that..thanks!

I am in the following mode.

Trade down in Round 1 adding a 2nd and a 4th to go along with the lower 1st round pick.

    You then have.

    1 First Round
    2 Second Round
    2 Third Round
    2 Fourth Round
    1 Fifth
    2 Sixth
    1 Seventh

7 picks in the first 4 rounds....That would be nice.

I like most like Sanders...and he can be a good player...however...he does seem replaceable. I know this year he was moving up to the #2 spot and could be his year to shine. But...if the offer was around $4mil then do NOT match it and take the 3rd. Sorry Sanders!

This is typical New England. They are scumbag football team. They really have no interest in Sanders, because there are better WRs on the open market and possibly in the draft. There are other posts, here, even showing Sanders' (lack of) production. What the Pats are interested in doing is damaging the Steelers' WR situation OR making them spend more to hurt their cap situation. You can either call it tactical brilliance or chicken$#!t. I say it's the latter.

I have serious doubt that they'd do this just to hurt us. If we were still on top, maybe, but they know we may call their bluff and not retain him... When you look at the Pats draft history of WR's you can kind of see why they might make a move like this...

The last solid WR they drafted and groomed was Deion Branch in 2002. Since then they've taken...
    Bethel Johnson (2nd)
    PK Sam (5th)
    Chad Jackson (2nd)
    Matt Slater (5th)
    Brandon Tate (3rd)
    Julian Edelman (7th)
    Taylor Price (3rd)
    Jeremy Ebert (7th)

It was for 2.5 Mil according to Schefter. The tweet I embedded was deleted though.

ETA- OK, looks like it was temporarily unavailable while it was being edited.

I guess I'd talk to him about getting a deal in principle for a longer term contract that would reduce the 2013 cap hit, and match if we can get a deal that works (for #3 WR money). If not, I take the 3rd round pick and move on. I like Sanders, but I see him as a #3 WR, not a starter. I wouldn't want to pay him starter money.

I thought it would be a higher offer. I'd match it at this price, and I think the Steelers will, too.

I had a hard time believing they offered him 4 mil...but hey...stranger things have happened.

This makes it more likely the Steelers will match...but it still is a lot of money tied up in him...especially not knowing if they will re-sign him after this year...if he leaves via FA next year...they would probably get less than a 3rd rounder then.

I wonder if they are able to counter with an offer thats a longer term deal but a lower cap hit? Hmmm...

    We shall see..

Now you can't say we have all similar size receivers. Don't match it,take the third rounder. Draft Austin in the first especially if we can trade back and still get him. Two 3rd rounders in this draft sounds good to me. RB anyone?

This would frighten me. We would have to have one hell of a productive year from our running game to have anything above a mediocre offense.

What frustrates me is that we had possible one of the most explosive WR corps in the league. After 2 seasons... no more.

Not really cotch has stepped up every time he has been asked to and Burress with a full off-season and training camp could still produce. We are missing a deep threat but brown can stretch the field. Also of they lose Sanders they will draft a wr. I have a lot of faith in Colbert and tomlin when drafting wrs. You figure they found Wallace Sanders and brown all in the third or later. Can you point to one game and say in this game Sanders was the difference maker because I can't. Burress had just as many tds as Sanders did last year.

i think to keep him they should guaranteed 2,5 milion in first year with sb and bas salary , if they like him could be easy , if thelike the 3rd round pick is even more easier .

I really hope they take the pick and laugh at the pats for trying to stick us for a million more on a rental because at this point that is all he is. The pats would be left with a first a second and a seventh. This is a chance for the Steelers to really screw over the pats depth and futures wise. Look at our 08 draft we should be watching those guys carry on the tradition but instead we are left scrambling

Weren't very explosive last season, they didn't shine much at all, I think we all may have overrated our receiving corpse. There are some good choices in this draft though.

In all honestly, if they match, I'm going to be upset. I would rather let him walk and get the pick. Unless you can tell me that he is going to stay past this coming year, I let him walk. If you don't take the pick and you keep him, you end up using a draft pick on a WR this year AND next year with your original 14 picks, whereas you can take an additional receiver, a 2nd, this year with the additional pick and be no worse off than you are for the upcoming season.

We have to start getting over the age thing and start throwing some of these guys into the fire to develop.

if we don't want to sign him long term we will be crazy to match , take the 3rd and sign a rookie 4 year deal , why rent sanders for one year at 2,5 milion with the tight cap space we have , we still can see if breaston is healthy enough too

They will probably let him walk. Plus, I think Sanders will prove to be like Wallace in negotiations.

    What makes you think that?

I'm a bit torn on this one. I think Sanders still has a lot of potential, and I still think a lot of you are overestimating the chances of just "picking up" the next Sanders or Wallace in the draft. I said it in another thread a while back, but memories of Lee Mays, Fred Gibson et al. are still there for me. When we got both Brown and Sanders in one go, that was a steal - not necessarily the norm.

However, it is true that Sanders doesn't seem to be as injury-free as we would want him to be.

if we want sanders you have to sign him long term now , otherwise match for only one year and then lose him is a non sense . you miss the 3rd round and the few money left in the cap . no way
