Do the Steelers need more coaches to compete and keep up with the trends in todays NFL? I looked at tow teams who are well thought of in the coaching realm in comparison to the Steelers. The Ravens and 49 er’s. Both of these teams have alot more coaches than the Steelers do.

I believe it makes sense to have more coaches for certain positions like Offensive line. I like the idea of Running and Passing Game Coordinators in addition to the Offensive Coordinator. It gives you more eyes on a play and more ideas and evaluations in preparation for a game.

Below is an article with Rooney opposing the idea that having a larger coaching staff will make a difference. I disagree. The players on your team are an asset. You want to extract as much production out of that asset as you can. Why not invest in them with more position specific coaches and position them within schemes and on the field to succeed? I feel like it is often alot of little things during the course of a game where the Steelers fall short. Wether its an in game challenge or the timing of a time out call, etc. In addition these players are typically on four year contracts. When they are rookies you have a limited time to develop them and turn them into a productive player on the field. As an organization wouldn’t you want to develop them as quickly as possible and maximize your investment in them?

For a quick view of the Steelers Coaching Staff and the Ravens and Forty Niners Staffs you can click on the links below.

I think I counted 24 coaches including the strength and conditioning coaches soon the Steelers. On the Ravens I counted 38 coaches. A bigger staff like that has some redundancy but I think that is a good thing. It allows the players more individual attention. It grooms the less experienced coaches for a bigger role if and when one of the senior assistants leaves, so that creates continuity within the organization. The Ravens also seem to value analytics, and diving up the responsibility of game prep to not just the Coordinators like the OC, DC and Special Teams Coach but they have Run Game Coordinators, Pass Game coordinators, Assistants to Coordinators, Defensive Pass Game Coordinator, etc. I think when you have more coaches like this in defined roles it really allows alot more coverage in game prep and teaching fundamentals to encourage development within your roster.

There’s a reason the Ravens lost the DC to a HC position and they replaced him and were productive last year. They didn’t start great on defense but they had the ability to adjust and make in season adjustments and drastically improve their defense. That isn’t something the Steelers are traditionally good at doing.

The Steelers have had an assistant OL coach for a few years, I don't think it has been proven more coaches makes you better.

The Steelers don’t need more coaches. They need a new HC with new ideas and an entire new staff. This should have been blown up several years ago. The Rooneys are way too loyal. In the meantime. Enjoy the 9-8 seasons and early PO exits.

I liked how Tampa turned it around.
When Bruce Arians came on he knew a culture change was needed and he overloaded his staff.
    It obviously worked.

I'm not sure that is the answer here though.
    I'd like to see upgrades.

Sf and Baltimore are consistently pretty good. I think it helps you stay innovative and it enables you to develop your players better.

Maybe the 49ers should hire some more coaches because under Shanahan they have had 4 losing seasons .

How about do the Steelers need to move on from their facility they share with Pitt? How many other Pro teams have to share their training complex with a college team?

Their Training and conditioning came in last in the NFL. Something like 3rd to last for players that thought that their staff did any good for them.

Art Rooney even went out of his way to talk about how things were going to change and how many soft tissue injuries the players suffered last year.

To me, the team facilities are one area that Big Time Rich Owners get to throw their money around and really make a difference.

I never viewed as something that is that big of a deal. Most of these players work out somewhere else in the offseason and alot of them pay for their own team people wether it is different modalities for healing and rehab or nutrition. I guess it might make a difference to the rookies or the players who don’t have the money to invest in these things on their own.

Shanahan, Mcvay and this newer generation of coaches may have some down years but thats because of their coaching style. They are more willing to take risks. In some cases they have had significant roster runner (due to their success and not being able to pay everyone) and they have had to replace assistant coaches again because of success which could effect consistency. Their brand of football is certainly more exciting than what we have seen from the Steelers of recent years.
