Maybe this is why the offense sucked at the end of the season.

I'm listening to this report now on 93.7 the Fan. Was it really Arthur Smith that scolded Wilson for going rogue? Or did it come from Tomlin who wants to win the "Steeler" way. Run the football and play defense.

Ummm, I wonder if this is a Mike Tomlin undertaking. This has been an ongoing issue for a few seasons now. Not having faith in a veteran to make an audible isn't a good way to attract veterans here in the future.

They were winning games and Wilson wasn't turning the ball over early on, I think that game winning TD pass to Mike Williams against Washington was Wilson making the call.

Well, the downer is, if true, it isn't likely to be addressed anytime soon. I don't have a problem with the coaches wanting to stay close to the game design to a degree, but there has to be some fluidity to it. RPOs, by definition, are option plays the QB makes the call with based upon the look the defense gives him. You have to be able to adjust, and trust your QB to do so as needed - especially a veteran like Wilson. And if you can't, you better make sure the coaches are 100% on point.

Every season seems filled with stuff like this: head-scratching play calls, poor clock management, counter-intuitive game-planning, etc. So given the relatively low cost (in the grand scheme of things) of adding a few coaches to help rein things in, Art II saying he doesn't see the problem coming from there just comes off sounding cheap and/or obtuse.

Don't think it will be a problem next season. IMO, Wilson is one and done.

I don't get why Smith would do that because the Steelers were running into loaded boxes at the end of the season .

What if Fields signs with another team, then they might try to re-sign Wilson.

I think it's more Rooney who wants to win the "Steelers way".

Let's not forget, it was Rooney who choose not to renew Arians contract.

Tomlin may pick some of the coaches, but Rooney decides how many he can have and how much they are paid.

This team will never win anything if the QB can't change the play. That simply does not work in the modern NFL.

The Rooney/Tomlin 'Steeler Way' won't work when your team isn't effective at running the ball, thanks to stacked fronts, and the defense is worn out by the end of the season.

Talk about the definition of insanity.

if true and they were winning but told to stop. guessing that can only be an ego thing?

more important to do do what i say than it is to win?

This is hilarious. You guys know this happens generally on every team. And it's not an every play situation. Talking about situational football here.

In case no one read the Post Gazette article this all occurred after our 44 point, 400 yard passing game from Wilson over the Bengals. Supposedly it was Arthur Smith that didn't like the way that Wilson changed play after play at the line of scrimmage.

I’m skeptical that the article is 100% accurate. However, if it’s 100% true both Smith and Tomlin should be cleaning out their offices of personal effects right now.

If you remember they would struggle to move the ball when Ben was here and then at the end of the half or the game they would go no huddle and Ben called his own plays and we moved the ball and would score. The only person who is still there out of that group is Tomlin so I doubt it’s the oc as much as it is Tomlin and his fear of turnovers.

Perhaps eager is not the right word. He way just be keeping all his options open. He’s 37, still wants to play, but has been on 3 teams in 4 yrs and didn’t exactly finish the past yr strong. If he thinks his market may be limited, no sense burning the bridge back to Pitt.

I don’t buy it. First off, it’s coming from Dulac so take it with a grain of salt.

Secondly, the whole point of having Russ play was for his experience and ability to check into the right play.

If Fields was starting then this report would be believable. Sounds like more excuse making for Russ. He’s at the end of his career, no one defeats Father Time, he’s just not a good QB anymore.
