since only one team a year makes it through that, it's pretty hard to predetermine what it will take to be said team. a couple of breaks in turnovers or another teams injury during the playoffs can go a long way as well. there are so many factors that go into it including the refs. no team can say without a doubt we have all the parts needed and will have to win it all. not even the chiefs.

We all prefer the defense to go 3 , and out. Only a idiot would not, but if I have to choose between giving up points, or yards......I rather give up yards. It really that simple.
I've heard a 100 arguments.....Yet not a one has yet to show me a game where yards, and not points won, or lost a game.

You just described how odds and probabilities work... and why it's better to make sure as much of the different factors are in your favor to make sure your odds of winning are higher ahead of time.

It's called basic strategy... it's been used by armies and people for thousands of years. US Army spends billions of $s making sure the officers get these basic concepts.

the reason you haven't heard it is because no one is arguing that bolded part. You just can't seem to get that the argument is not about that bolded part.

We are trying to say only an idiot would not care about yards at all, ever. I've been trying to say it is idiotic to not prefer a 3-and-out defense. Seems like you agree now.

The steelers gave up more points that they score in each years from 2021 to 2023 and they still had a winning record in each of those years.....

The steelers offense have also been much better in the non Trubisky game since they started to have more often 400 yards or more on offense.5 times in the last 12 non Trubisky game they had over 400 yards on offense since they fired Canada and they are 4-1 in those games...They had also 397 yards in a another game,in a win too so 5-1 when they have around 400 yards on offense or more!

Of course the points in a game is the most important thing but the points is not just about the offense or defense, this is my point...Sometimes this is a team effort like the 1 yard TD drive vs Jets....I gave more credit to the defense in that drive!

    And.
Then why are You few arguing. Everyone knows that yards matter, but they don't matter as much as points. You know this, I know this, and a freaking 1st year football watcher knows this. So why are some of You still arguing??? LoL
I said Points matter more than yards.....yet somehow some people try , and keep arguing something different. Why??? If You know this is true, and I know this is true.....why keep arguing??? LoL

We are in agreement! Frankly, it's the first post you've made that actually says what you said above.

Anyways... agreement is such relief, especially in a bye week.

there are several things that change that outcome as well. Pearl harbor. Afghanistan. Vietnam. 9/11. Beruit. Many other factors besides the millions spent to be ready effect the outcomes.

Yes, points are what matters. Obviously I'd rather give up 500 yards and 13 points than 100 yards and 20 points.. But not every team is going to struggle to score when their offense is humming. People aren't panicking, but it is definitely a bit concerning to give up a lot of yards up to bad offenses. We play a lot of GOOD offenses the second half of the season, and the thing about good offenses is that they are better at turning yards into points. Hence... why they are good offenses, not bad ones.

I don't think anyone is saying the sky is falling. I know we're going to have good games and not so good games.... but the defense will have to do better than they have been the last month if we want to win the majority of our remaining games.

The Commanders also have the weakest strength of schedule in the NFL so far this year. Only team under .400.

We are talking about two different things, winning one particular game and evaluating a defense's performance to help predict what they will do going forward. The former is fine for a single game, but if you are doing the latter, you need to consider yards and other measures as well.

    January 11, 2020: Titans 28, Ravens 12
Mr. Regular Season MVP throws for 365 yards and runs for 143 yards
The Titans had 300 yards of total offense

The debate in this thread reminded me of this game and made me smile.

    @S.T.D

Nobody said that points for a single game were not the most important stat!

But in the long run, yards and other context matter big time.... Do you really think that the bears with Rex Grossman and the colts with Peyton Manning during the super bowl in 2006 had a similar offense?... If we only look at the PPG, they had the same PPG!

Same thing for super bowl in 2019 between the chiefs and the 49ers... The 49ers with Jimmy G had more PPG than the chiefs but we all know who had the best offense
