Getting the right personnel on the field

I have a question for all the football knowledge brokers out there. I have always been curious how communication happens to get the right personnel on the field for each play. For example, say Harris gets 2 yards on first down. The offensive coordinator quickly has to decide what play to call next, and the right people need to get on the field, and the wrong people off the field, and then the play gets called in the huddle, and players get aligned, all before time runs out. How do the needed players on the sidelines get the word they are up, and the folks they are replacing get the word to get off the field? I know the QB has the dot, but does he tell the folks on the field to get off, and some assistant on the sidelines tells those standing around they are needed. Same must happen on defense. Everyone's gotta be paying attention.

Any insights? Inquiring minds want to know. Seems pretty complex.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that is what practices are for.

It sounds really complicated, but every football team deals with this, even the awful division III teams and high school teams and mostly get it right. That tells you with a little practice AND planning by the OC/HC, before gameday, scripting plays and be prepared, it should rarely be a big deal. Also having an assistant be responsible for calling personnel grouping code word/numbers out, their only job. In high school this might be a student assistant or a flunky PE teacher, but in pros, its a decently paid assistant.

Done remotely by bots triggering tazers attached to certain anatomical parts. But with the number of times the Steelers have too many or too few guys on the field, I'd say many don't know if their coming or going or the bots are hitting the bottle. :drinks:

Hopefully one knows if they are on defense or offense. ;)
True it appears the players have trouble some.

A flunky PE teacher with a bunch of years in a public school system and some OT can make six figures and will continue that into retirement

Just for telling kids to kick a ball

The quick answer is hand signals for the personnel, then the formation called in the huddle.

I guess if you’re the 4th string DT you’re unlikely to pay much attention, whereas Najee and Warren will have to be looking for the signal each play.

It’s why at the end of a play, say Allen Robinson makes a catch, the first thing he’ll do is look to the sideline to see if he needs to stay on the field or not.

To be fair our flunky PE teacher in a small district also put the square dance record on and organized us into groups of 8 (when he/she was still acceptable), IDK if she could count to 9, but she got the job done.

Exactly how does that tell you what the next play is

So I guess it gets more complicated if the OC calls a play with one personnel group, and the HC overrides that and wants a play with a different group. Barely enough time for all that to happen. Probably why Terry Bradshaw called his own plays and Ben liked the hurry up. Less need for all that communication.

We can’t possibly answer that because we are steeler fans and Steelers have no system to make this fundamental task happen routinely.

What's even more pathetic the kids don't even have to kick the ball if they don't want to, they can just sit on the bleachers. As long as they dress for gym they get credit. We are close to the abyss if not already falling into it!!
