I wanted to see Washington get the ball and do his thing: run over or jump over people. Get him the ball on a rollout pass and see what he can do. He did it once against the Raiders but didn't see anything yesterday. We got plays for Pickens but now got to see plays for Washington.

First play by the Raiders in their game tonight was a concerted effort by the Raiders to get their tight ends involved and the guy was wide open. How come we can't scheme that. A little roll out to the right and he was wide open.

Refs decided not to call PI when he was tackled before the pass got to him yesterday.

    Get the ball to him?!

How about Matt Canada giving him a damn chance to do so!! Two passes thrown his way; both unwinnable cases?! Lovely...

Never mind that, why not have him used in Goal Line situations?!.... Like ya drafted him to be?! Him blocking is nice but my goodness.... give his ass a chance to make plays!

I do understand that Tight End is easily one of the most brutal positions to transition to in the NFL from College. This is further compounded by the lack of experience that Washington himself has played overall from Georgia to Pittsburgh. That said, part of an OC's job is to fast track that development so he can be a contribution sooner rather than later. With any luck, this can change during the Bye Week as Freiermuth sadly gets banged up quite a bit.

That's the play that should've been PI on the Ravens.

It would've been nice to see some rollout passes to Washington on first down, instead of them running on first down and barely gaining any yards .

He has to become more involved all TE's should. I am not so sure Friermuth can stay healthy
enough to be able to depend on him. Plus Freiermuth is a terrible blocker.

He's so damn big, for a second I thought KP threw to a lineman by mistake on that play.

    Let the hate begin.

Darnell Washington isn't that good. He just isn't. He is a huge, lumbering guy. I get the appeal. But he's raw. This is the kind of guy that needs to be used situationally, which by the way is pretty much how he was used at Georgia.

I see him developing into a good TE2 down the road. But he isn't there yet. As a full game starter the Steelers would have been far better off with Gentry.

The jury’s out. I worry about the nagging knee injury on a guy that big.

Funny thing about that package is, the 10 play playbook is really only 5 plays. They can be run left or right.

Flip it upside down and it's a whole new playbook.

Awhile back, there was a discussion about scheme and how much of it was really responsible for getting players open and the success of any given play. In the 9ers game against Dallas, Kittles second touchdown was basically a modified wheel route after he acted like he was staying in to block. He was wide open. That is all because of scheme. No team in their right mind leaves one of the best tight ends in the game uncovered unless they are fooled. That is what Canada seems to be unable to do.

Of course, it didn't hurt that the line gave Purdy the proper amount of time for the play to develop.

He looked quite befuddled as the pass came, like it was a foreign object to him.

100% spot on man. I watched it int he niners game, the raiders/packers game, etc. Guys just wide open that any of us that can throw a football could have got it to them. Now it starts with the o line creating the pocket but the schemes these offensive coordinators use to create open receivers is a beauty to watch, not overly complicated but the right play at the right time. I remember way back in the day Heath would get a couple wide open shots in the end zone where he blocked released and nobody covered him. I think our line play has been so bad/inconsistent that they keep our TE's in for protection. Hines used to live off a quick slant into the end zone from the slot. I think we had one try on Sunday from the left and KFP fired a bullet high. Anyway our OC scheme sucks.

They need to get the big guy more involved. How do you not give kenny another target, a huge one at that on goal line situations?

I think we need those 5+ yard easy throws to our TEs. It seems like right now everything is outside the numbers and a back shoulder fade.

Except the local media has mentioned many times how Gentry's blocking fell off the last few years, they probably drafted Washington more for his blocking potential than his receiving ability.
