Should Matt Canada be fired during the bye week?

I understand the concept of continuity and the argument that the Steelers have fully committed to Matt Canada’s offense for going on three years now, so a change now may be counterproductive. But I don’t see the offense improving from week to week. I see most of the talented young offensive skill position players regressing and I see a quarterback who is lacking confidence and seems lost most of the time.

It’s incredible that this team is in first place but it’s mostly thanks to an opportunistic defense. If the Steelers had lost today and the offense underperformed, I think it would have almost been impossible for Tomlin not to fire Canada. But since they pulled out a win, even though the offense mostly underperformed with yet another abysmal first half, Tomlin may be able to justify keeping him in place.

I just think he needs to go. If we can get the offense to the point of somewhat resembling an NFL offense and with our very good defense, we may be able to make a post season run and make some noise once we get there. Firing an OC mid-season is not common, but it’s been done before and worked out pretty well for the Ravens a few years ago when they won the Super Bowl after Harbaugh fired his OC mid-year.

It’s time that Canada is held accountable and that he gets on with his life’s work.

As much as I wish it old friend... don't bet on it. Now, before you rebuttal, allow me to clarify something; I feel the same as you do. I believe it is time for some change at the OC position. Thing is, this is something that the Steelers simply don't do.

However, while I don't believe the Steelers will fire Canada, what they can do is greatly reduce his involvement within the Offensive Game Plan. How so?! Mike Sullivan does have experience in this area. Allow him to have a greater hand in the Game Plan during the bye week; Glen Thomas assisting him. Canada's input can be greatly reduced.

Once the season ends, jettison his ass.

Oh, I agree with you. While I think it should be done, I don’t think it will be done. One thing is for sure, Tomlin needs to shake up the offensive coaching staff in some form or fashion. If that’s allowing Canada to save face by retaining him but getting Sullivan and Thomas more involved in the playcalling, so be it. They can’t, however, continue to do the same things and expect different results.

Matt Canada should be fired, no question about it.

But he won't be, IMHO. Art II hates controversy and is loathe to pay someone to sit at home.

The win, coupled with injuries on offense (Freiermuth, Johnson, Moore, etc) will be the justification to the media.

I also don't know if there's a replacement on staff. I assume it would be Sullivan.

    I don’t think they will.

He has a valid excuse of a lot of turn over on the roster and a lot of injuries early in the season.

I think they let the season play out. If the light turns on they keep him.

But I think the offense needs to show the ability to put up more than 20pts a game at some point. We won’t be winning any Superbowls if we can’t.

The offense will need to carry the defense at times.
