Pickett did not pick up where he left off last season but with each game he seems to be improving

The OL didn’t start out great

The defense had communication problems to start the season

    Etc

Would the posters who thought the starters should play little to not at all in preseason please put your hands up

I thought it was because Steelers have 2 first quarter first downs.

Now you know if an injury would have happened to a star player in one of those pre-season games those on the side of not using starters would have a real strong point.

IMO, these guys are paid big bucks and should be ready to play football at a minutes notice. They should stay in football shape year round.

I do agree with your point that pre-season helps these guys work together as a unit.

Defense was better prepared than offense. This is typical of most teams in September.

playing against vanilla defense shouldn't have mattered. they were on in the preseason. it was when teams started game planning against them that the problems started. losing your best d-lineman and your best receiver right off the bat didn't help either. DJ going down hurt KP. DJ could get open quickly off the snap and his not being there has hurt KP's security blanket that he worked with all preseason. that expectancy of knowing he will be at a spot when you need him is gone and now KP has to read more of the field.

There is a big difference between staying in shape and being in football shape,

Winner. This applies to every sport, but especially to one that is physical. There is no exercise that gets You ready for another Man going against You physically....besides actually doing it.

Opponents have the same issues playing against vanilla schemes. The reality is the Steelers have probably played two top 5 defenses. Having said that, the problem is the quality of assistant coaching that is on the staff, especially the offensive side of the ball. If Houston plays like they did against Jacksonville, the Steelers will find out what kind of team they are going to be.

That's the key considering they have new folks on the line and a young QB they needed all the work they could get in pre-season as that was what practice with pads used to be. The amount of actual plays not just series they had in pre-season was abysmally small considering several of those were a couple play series and we scored. Also who cares what other teams are doing the team needed every snap they could get to gel with one another.

The Steelers starters played about as much as most did in the NFL. Most of the teams in week 1 were sloppy aside from a few exceptions.

The issue is getting rid of the 4th pre-season game. It allows for less time to get ready. The last thing you want is your starters out there against guys trying to make a team. Guys that are playing for their jobs tend to do things in the game trying to make an impact.

Sorry, just a product of living on the left coast. I've escaped much of the drama with my last two homesteads in small rural towns where pickup trucks with gun racks greatly outnumber Prius's.

Not that I follow preseason that closely, because I'm not a masochist, but I thought we played our starters as much or more than most teams
