Interesting. It's a new stat, so yes I'm skeptical how accurate this is.

I do know that when I dared question his productivity, or lack thereof, I was told by the football sophisticates here that I must be watching a different game, since he was obviously running wide open every play

Seems getting open has been an issue not only for Pickins but the others as well. When defenses don't respect the ability to run the ball they can max out in coverage not worrying about the box. This is where coaches come in and make adjustments  Plus you have the tight ends helping Moore most of the game.

I'm guessing Trub does strike fear in defensive backs.

Is also worth noting that DJ is ranked at the top of that list

Dj's issue has never been getting open.

    1. He's a rookie.
    2. Getting open is different for every receiver. Some are better at contested catches than others. Catches Pickens can make are not the same type of catches DJ can make. It's a very misleading stat.

It's really not misleading though. Doesn't matter who it is, contested catches are harder. The QB has to put it in a perfect spot as there's little margin for error. The WR has to also outmuscle the DB for the ball, something that just isn't going to happen every time. While Pickens can make more contested catches than DJ, success is far more likely if he can create some separation.

I've seen him open alot and started wishing that we had Ben back. Because, we're just wasting these young guys talent. And, the throws that he does catch ... he has to be houdini.

What is open though? A 6-4 receiver against a 5-10 DB versus a 5-10 receiver against a 6-0 DB....does the stat take this into account?

Another group of people that never play football....telling people what they think.....same as PFF = Pretty F**king Fake.
I've personally seen Him open....after awhile of getting open , and the Qb doesn't look your way.....well....You just don't try as hard. Reminds Me of My college team.

pickett could help this situation. seems more like a gunslinger mentality, if they let him go. i think his excitement got the best of him and with a full week of work the passes will come down instead of sailing a bit. those were costly but not always his fault. the receivers have to stop handing the defense tip drills on those.

Exactly along the lines I was thinking.. Megatron was probably never open according to those stats yet he could be triple covered and still make the catch.. Probably Y he said he is open 90 % of the time as if you throw it high where only he can get it he is open..

As long as that type always fights for the ball I say look their way anytime its 1 v 1 coverage..

    Counting plays negated by penalty

    Trubisky to Pickett
    5 passes 3 complete 45 yards

1 M.Trubisky pass incomplete deep right to G.Pickens

2 M.Trubisky pass short middle to G.Pickens to NYJ 35 for 14 yards PENALTY on PIT-J.Daniels, Ineligible Downfield Pass, 5 yards, enforced

3 M.Trubisky pass short left to G.Pickens to PIT 30 for 5 yards

4 M.Trubisky pass deep middle to G.Pickens to PIT 45 for 26 yards

5 M.Trubisky pass incomplete deep right to G.Pickens

    Pickett to Pickens
    5 passes 4 complete 68 yatds

1 K.Pickett pass short left to G.Pickens pushed ob at NYJ 35 for 5 yards

2 K.Pickett pass short left to G.Pickens to NYJ 22 for 13 yards

3 K.Pickett pass incomplete short left to G.Pickens. PENALTY on PIT-K.Dotson, Ineligible Downfield Pass, 5 yards

4 K.Pickett pass deep left to G.Pickens to NYJ 31 for 26 yards

5 K.Pickett pass deep middle to G.Pickens to NYJ 48 for 27 yards

So actually very similar stats. Especially when you take off the last pass from Kenny as that was seconds left in the game and the jets were giving up anything short of aTD

Hopefully we will see it more this week

I’m hopping this gunslinger has the mental capacity to learn the playbook

Maybe we can win a playoff game some year

Bigger than that is able to project it onto the field. I would bet 90% of Qbs in the NFL can read, and react on a board, or their pad, but can they bring it to the field.....it's like people watching a boxing match ,and saying what they should do....while not taking a hit themselves.

He's not that type of receiver. He doesn't actually need physical separation to be open. He is a "combat catch" specialist. If he has 1 inch, he's open. Other players who are more slippery (like DJ) are going to have more measurable separation, but that type of guy needs the space.

Interesting comparison, Hack. And thanks for doing this.

Did Pickens perform better? very subject to debate.

Some see better team performance under Kenny Pickett. Take away the plays with penalties, since they weren't official plays, and the actual gains for the team were Pickett 4 for 4 for 71 yards. And Mitch is 2 for 4 for 31 yards. big difference. Twice as effective under Kenny Pickett. Even take away the last second big gainer throw and his stats are still better, 3 for 3 for 44 yards. And no 3-and-outs with Kenny.

However, others have a good point that Kenny had 2 more INTs that will kill drives no matter how many more yards/completions you had.

Only way I can see it is how it happened. Kenny came in the O moved and had a lead late in the 4th. The O wasn’t moving much or leading prior to him coming in. The atmosphere changed and we can’t argue that. We shall see how the young buck fares moving foreword with the good and bad.

we just lost a HOFer that threw multiple whoopsies in multiple games in his career. Plenty of times we all called for the coach to yank his ass be it him having an off day or injured or whatever… just to get a spark to try and change the the slog of the day.

they needed a spark and the rook gave em one. Hope he grows into the role and keeps things pointing upwards

At this point winning a playoff game seems like a huge goal. So sad lol
