Since 1970, who was the Steelers third-best QB behind Bradshaw and Ben or Ben and Terry?

    O'Donnell? Stewart? Brister? Malone? Others?

I say Kordell Stewart in instead of O'Donnell. Stewart had some bone-headed INTs in AFC Championship games but NOD had him beat with the 2 in SBXXX. Plus the worst playoff loss in Steelers history happened with NOD at QB....vs. Chargers in '94 season.

Geez....that's really tough to answer. Maddox? Yeah, I can't really come up with one.

Based on wins I have to go for Stewart

O’Donnell had better stats but he just wasn’t a winner at heart

If it was third and 7 O’Donnell would throw a safe 5 yard out pattern and then we would have to punt Stewart would scramble rather than looking down field then he would throw an interception but atleast he was going with a winning attitude

Maddox, only two full seasons as the starter but the 2002 Run was one to remember - he was comeback player of the year.

O'Donnell disqualifies himself with the awful super bowl performance

if you go back before 1970 i'm inclined to put Bobby Layne as no. 3

Maddox had a great 2002, but 2003 was average at best for the offense. The defense was more to blame for the 6-10 record than the offense. Thank the gods the Steelers went 6-10 and was able to get the 11th pick in the '04 draft.

Maddox also had that awful OT pick 6 in '05 season vs. Jags... while Ben was out with injury. I destroyed one of my TV remotes when that happened. Thankfully for me at the time, my closest neighbor was 100+ yards away. If I had lived in a more crowded neighborhood in 2005... I would have ended up in jail.

I would have to say O'Donnell because he at least got us to a Super Bowl. Messed it up when he got there, but hey we were in it.

That's how i felt about O'Donnell and his Super Bowl 30 int's. I knew he was gone as soon as the game was lost. And i'll never forget that look of disgust Rod Woodson gave him on the sidelines when the game was winding down - all caught on camera

I would go with HOF QB Bobby the "Blonde Bomber" Layne. Played 5 years for the Steelers.

    Talk about a Pre-Madonna
Drafted by the Steelers in the 1st round (3rd Overall Pick) in 1948, but refused to play for them, so he was then traded to the Bears.
Lasted 1 year in Chicago before being traded to the New York Bulldogs.
Lasted a year with the Bulldogs before being traded to Detroit.

And, then in 1958 he was traded back to the Steelers from Detroit, but before leaving Detroit he put a curse on the entire Detroit Lions organization.

As a member of the Steelers he was one of the last players in the NFL to play without a facemask!

    "Curse of Bobby Layne"

In 1958, the defending NFL champion Lions traded Layne to the Pittsburgh Steelers in early October for Earl Morrall and two draft choices. Layne responded to the trade by supposedly saying that the Lions would "not win for 50 years."

Definitely pre-1970 it would be Bobby Layne, he is in the HOF after all. After 1970 for me it would Tommy Maddox.

Neil O’Donnell. If the idiot had hung around a little longer I’m convinced he would have had the opportunity to compete for more Super Bowls. He had a solid supporting cast and was a good distributor of the football. Septic tank syndrome got him.

I don't have a problem with Maddox. It was a regular season game, Maddox made a bad throw but the Steelers ended up winning the Super Bowl, so all is forgiven. At the time... I was infuriated. Maddox was obviously a better starter than a backup.

I'm going with NOD. He was very careful with the ball and rarely threw ints. This is not a joke! He threw fewer interceptions per 100 passes than Kordell, Malone, Brister, BRADSHAW, or BEN. He'll forever be remembered in Pgh for his SB ints, but outside that one game he was very good at ball security.
