They play a lot of three-wide. Those guys aren't all going to be out there every single play. There will be snaps for a fourth receiver. Who else is going to get those snaps? Olszewski? Smith-Schuster, McCloud, and Washington combined for 138 targets last season. Do you think all of those are going to Pickens? If Austin can play, and there are plenty of reasons to believe that he can, he will get his opportunities.

I'm not saying Austin is going to dominate. I expect Pickens to make the larger impact, but there is middle ground between dominating and having no impact at all. I expect Austin to occupy that middle ground.

Lets figure out the targets/ Completions for these receivers.

    Johnson 85
    Claypole 70
    Pickens 50
    Freiermuth 60
    Najee Harris 60
    Austin 30

Now add in Running plays 300

Let's see your list. Only so many footballs to go around.

    I understand your concern.

We drafted 2 receivers in which were major needs which I was hoping for.

Pickens needs to have a seem less transition right away.

Austin III has light speed and will also help fielding punts and kick offs.

Both are question marks until the hittin starts and the games count.

The issue is Claypool. He needs fight in his game, make the tough catch, dominate. This will be his 3rd season. Expectations should and will be high.

Johnson at this point may not get a contract extension with the addition of Pickens. I would like to see him stay but I don't know if they want to shell out 20 large a season. Not having to pay a QB a kings ransom is in his favor though. Minkah needs to be extended.

I feel Freiermuth and Gentry will see plenty of action as well as Harris.

So the reality is we have one receiver without questions in Johnson.

JuJu was hurt last year so most of those targets were part of the 3 WR sets with everyone just filling in for JuJu.

Washington was the true 4th receiver, he had 45 targets on the year, thats what I expect from Austin.

You guys are going to be disappointed with his level of involvement. Unless like I said he plays out of his mind and makes it impossible to keep off the field. I seriously doubt that.

wes welder was only 180lbs and desean Jackson was 170. Don’t think anyone will be complaining about Austin’s size if we see that kind of production from him

I was just trying 2 point out just 10 pounds of pure muscle is a big difference....while it may not make a difference in playing Wr....it is a difference. I have personally never watched this guy play, and highlights mean nothing 2 me.....so I can't really say if He's good , or not....just pointing out the weight difference.
Remember My Friend. I'm not here 2 argue....just discuss.

    IMO....it's the Qb.
Beating a:beathorse:, but I've said this many times.....,and will stick with it.....97% of Wrs are made by their Qbs. It the reason great Qb always have good Wrs most of the time, and bad Qb just can't seem 2 get any.

While I will agree that the qb’s accuracy and timing is important of equal importance is a wr’s ability to create separation.

I don’t like Claypool at all. He needs to go. He was horrible last year. The problem is when he suck’s again this year Tomlin will blame the rookie QB and keep Claypool on the field.

Tomlin would not put Sanders and Brown on the field. What makes you think these guys will get a shot. If we had Randy Moss and Jerry Rice as rookies this year they would still be on the bench. That way DJ and Claypool could stink the place up.

Sanders had almost 400 yards receiving as a rookie.

And Claypool had 62 catches for 873 yards and 9 TD's as a rookie. So yeah, it's not difficult imagining Pickens getting a lot of PT especially considering there's nobody else behind Claypool and DJ. I think Calvin Austin will be filling a similar role that Quadree Henderson (Pitt 2016) and Conner Heyward filling the role of George Aston (Pitt 2016). So yea, Austin may not get a bunch of targets, but I'm sure he'll get about 2-3 jet sweeps a game, plus a couple of fake jet sweeps.

AQL I appreciate your views and thoughts on all things Steelers related, so please do not take this as a direct shot at you.

But forgive me If I do not take seriously the tweets of of guys that call themselves @Triggeredwise and the Lone Boner. I sure do miss the days when the news was brought to us by people qualified to do so.

This is exactly what I am talking about. Don't you think those are awfully lofty expectations for Pickens?

    Jaamar Chase's best college season

    84 rec 1780 yds 20 TDs

    George Pickens best college season

    49 rec 727 yds 8 TDs.

Some of you guys are looking for this kid to do things right off the bat that he wasn't even able to do in college. Right now Pickens is a guy that is said to have some maturity issues, is coming off a major injury, and had limited college production. To think he is going to come in and dominate right out of the gates........well it's just flat not going to happen. It's going to take time.

I am not ready to give up on Claypool yet. I will give him 1 more season before I give up on him. He has been terrible since the 2nd half of the 2020 season. Maybe the QB change will make a difference. If it doesn't, and he continues to struggle, it's time to move on.
