My vote is Polamalu. Reed was fantastic on the back end and a ball hawk but Troy did it all. He blew up plays at the line of scrimmage and covered the back end well.

A better comparison would be Troy Polamalu vs. Ronnie Lott. Lott played SS. It's hard to compare SS to FS... both are vastly different positions, IMO.

Even in that case I would still go with Troy. Lott was fantastic but you can’t even play safety in todays NFL the way he played back then.

Lott was smart enough to adapt. He played by the rules as they were written at the time. He was better than Polamalu in coverage, could blow people up, and he was a ballhawk. He couldn't make some of the freakish, highlight-reel plays that Polamalu did, but he was a more complete player and a more durable one.

That argument is why it's not feasible to compare generational talents. The game evolves, rules change, conditioning and equipment have improved. That said Lott was an 8x all pro at both CB and SS. To switch from CB to S is not as easy as some would believe, to do it at a consistent all pro level is amazing. Love Troy and as a homer would always want him in B and G, 6x all pro. Idk, as a gm I don't think you could miss on either one, flip a coin.

It is a shame Troy got hurt in 2009. He was poised to have a HUGE year.

Up until he got hurt he was playing lights out.

He would never had been a true CB like Lott, but Troy was every bit as versatile.

That was the big difference between the two. Polamalu really wasn't very good in man-to-man coverage. Lott was an All-Pro corner before he made the switch.

Two different positions as @HeinzMustard stated. For that matter, two vastly different responsibilities. Regardless, they are either regarded as the greatest of their respective positions or at worst, second to whomever their superiors are.

Reed had the better stats but Troy had better intangibles.

Both seemed to always make that big play at the most crucial points of a game.

Both got into the QBs head.

Realistically, one was as good a player as the other, but I'd have to give Troy the tie breaker because he had the better Head And Shoulders commercial.

I'm assuming if you pick Ed Reed, then you get banned?

Putting aside that they played 2 different positions with 2 different defensive roles, I'd call it a draw.

Both were outstanding and critical to their team's defensive success. Ed Reed was a complete safety with zero weaknesses that I could ever see. Troy was a disruptive force of nature.

It's nice to see Polamalu has 100% of the vote. I guess that means Benny Lava didn't vote yet.
