Really liking this FA

Steelers are addressing all positions of need, but ILB so far. And not just looking to throw it all into a new QB that cost a lot of cap space and would take draft picks.

Mason Cole can be a starter. But at minimum he steps in for an injured center/guard. Got 3 years 15 million...... Cheap

James Daniel great starter at guard. And can play center if needed. Got 3 years for 25 million. When he was looking to get 5 years for 60 million. So that's a steal.

Trubisky is better than 2020/2021 big Ben. Facts are facts. His signing is cheap at 2 years for 14.5 million. But if he gets incentives for pro bowl, AFC championship, and another ring.
- worse case we draft a QB and switch them 2023.
- best case is he's cheaper then what Jimmy would have been. And didn't cost us a trade.
- and has a line, that big Ben wish he had his last couple years.
- again cheap

Levi Wallace. Great 2nd CB. Got him 2 years for 8 million. When reports said 3 years for 25 million.... Again cheap.

And then able to bring back some of our guys.

We still need to find a ILB. So maybe they free up room or trade claypool.

 

I can see us taking MW first round with ILB Harris from Alabama in the second. Or going with the ILB from Georgia and going ridder in the second.

PS, I don't think we have much left in cap space, except to sign draft picks. But we could definitely move cap within our own players for more space..... So maybe we get the LB from Jacksonville. (But that's wishful thinking).

 

They need to release Banner and Shobert. That leaves plenty of money for another FA (SS or ILB) and we could still extend DJ or bring back Spoon or something else. Those 1-4 round picks are going to be fun.

 

I never remember how much they keep in cap space for draft picks. It would be nice if all rookies were exempt from salary cap.

 

Naw. Because getting top players in low rounds should cost you more.

But for where we are. We need maybe 5. And then sometimes we like to keep a reserve in the tank of an injury happens mid season and we need to sign someone or make a trade.

 

I say cut Bush, keep Shobert and draft best ILB possible in round 1/#20.

 

Generally +- 10 with 5+- for in season stuff.

They have, with banner and Schubert release, like 12 mil post June ( I think ). Problem is I see both being held until training camp. It's just how the Steelers do it.

I may be wrong but again, the Steelers try to go into the draft with out a "hole."

Still wondering what we're doing at SS but I think we'll know by weeks end, for better or worse.

Anyone know of a SS in the 1st or 2nd that is worth it?

$12.8 million. Sign Minkah long term, save another $2-3 million. Draft a QB in 1 or 2 and cut Mason, another $3 million. Sign the Honey Badger. Sign Miles Jack. Everything fixed.

To add- depending on what happens with Tuitt, if he chooses to retire that would be another $4.3 million.

I'd like him on the team, makes a scary backend but will he be 32 by the time we're ready for another run?
I don't expect a SB in 22, so maybe 24?

I'd say look at the online signing and we're getting guys that are on the younger side. This reason is why I didn't want Jansen (31?).

Looks typical like we playing the, well develop these guys up. So when they hit 30+ we're making a run.

Sounds right. I hated that pick. H.A.T.E.D. IT! But, he's solid enough, nothing special but we could do worse. If there's an affordable deal to be had with him and we use the money elsewhere (ILB FA, extend Minkah or DJ), I can live with Edmunds coming back. Not loving SS in the draft. There were/are some interesting FA SS out there but cost is an issue.

 

Mathieu hasn't that good the last two seasons, especially in coverage, probably a big reason Kansas City didn't try to keep him.

 

Hopefully he can keep healthy and knock off the silly attitude penalties.

 

or at least by the 2nd round. schobert's salary is the only problem i see with this theory, but i have been on this train as well. we have johnson too as a bridge to get up to speed with the high draft pick and next year we cut schobert loose. 2023 actually get's us more money saved for schobert's release then this year. the dead money remains about the same.

 

The Steelers have set themselves up for the draft pretty well, even if they don't sign anyone else.
They did add a CB (not the one I would have) via Free Agency and LB can come from the draft.
Safety, I think they probably will have to look for one in Free Agency. I was kind of high on Kyle Hamilton out of Notre Dame.
But after seeing him, he's probably going to be a tweener LB I think.
That's not what the Steelers need.

Other than him, there's not a lot of S's on the Big Board.

Draft for need or Best Player Available.
I've always been a fan of BPA, if your talent bar across the roster is such.
If WR Wilson (Ohio) feel to #20 I'd take him in the bat of an eye. But that's a long shot.

If drafting for need, I'd take a long look at Damone Clark (you could get him in the 2nd maybe)
The question becomes the fit for a 3-4 base.
Devin Lloyd might be a better fit but I think he might go in the 1st.

Colbert is keeping it interesting.

 

I've been pleasantly surprised so far. Lots of movement and the Steelers are filling all of their biggest needs pretty quickly. They still have a few more moves that need to be made but this team should be improved next season. I also like the Trubisky deal - low-risk, high-reward. He's definitely better than Ben has been the last few seasons and ff he's ass in 2022, just move on. If not, we may have a legitimate QB for a couple of years.

The biggest winner is Najee Harris. The line is going to be so much better next season. He had to run really hard to get what he did in 2021. I think it'll be a lot better in 2022.

Edit: I'd also go hard after Honey Badger. He has his flaws but a Fitzpatrick-Mathieu tandem would be splash city. They'd also likely feed off each other.

They won't do that because then they will have egg on their faces on the mistake. Shobert will be gone I believe and that dumb contract.

Both were liabilities last season.

Definitely need to draft an ILB in either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

 

It’s been a good safe cheap free agency. Can’t complain. We don’t look flashy like the broncos, but the Steelers aren’t meant to compete for a title imo in 2022. They are setting themselves up for one soon though… I hope

 

That would be a solid duo but I feel he will be asking to much.
