The Steelers had a scout at Smith's pro day this week, he could be an option in the 3rd or 4th round.

I think that could be the pick at 20. If not EDGE like Ojabo.

Tyler Smith is not a First Round prospect I am afraid. David Ojabo I could understand but if this were the case then something has had to have happened with Alex Highsmith; a bad scenario if there ever was one. Now, Tyler Smith can be had in the fourth round though if all options are exhausted by that point in Round Three, I would pull the trigger on him.

Mind you I did say all options exhausted by Round 3; Leo Chenal, Rasheed Walker, etc.

Sorry, but Tyler Smith is first round value. Now, it could happen that he drops down to 7th round, but that is besides the point, he is a first round prospect. A beast.

Look at the players drafted in the first round going back to 2016, and tell me where he ranks:

    2021 Draft (5)
    7 Penei Sewell T
    13 Rashawn Slater T
    14 Alijah Vera Tucker G
    17 Alex Leatherwood T
    23 Christian Darrisaw T

    2020 Draft (6)
    4 Andrew Thomas T
    10 Jedrick Wills T
    11 Mekhi Becton T
    13 Tristan Wirfs T
    18 Austin Jackson T
    29 Isaiah Wilson T

    2019 Draft (4)
    11 Jonah Williams T
    22 Andre Dillard T
    23 Titus Howard T
    31 Kaleb McGary T

    2018 Draft (4)
    6 Quentin Nelson G
    9 Mike McGlinchey T
    15 Colton Miller T
    23 Isaiah Wynn T
    33 Austin Corbett T/G

    2017 Draft (2)
    20 Garett Boles T
    32 Ryan Ramczyk T

    2016 Draft (6)
    6 Ronnie Stanley T
    8 Jack Conklin T
    13 Laremy Tunsil T
    16 Taylor Decker T
    28 Joshua Garnett G
    31 Germain Ifedi T

In comparison to the likes of Evan Neal, Charles Cross, Ikem Ekwonu and Trevor Penning??!Hardly.

He has First Round athletic and physical talent no doubt. However, the more finite aspects of his game need some serious tuning up; doubly so his overall pass protection sets and flexibility. Cross, Ickey, Trevor and even Evan all have him beat in those two categories; doubly so in Cross' case.

I agree that one of the top 4 tackles should be taken over Tyler Smith. I also think that Abraham Lucas should be taken over Tyler Smith. I do not agree that Tyler Smith is not in play at 20.
I also want to point out that Smith is a bit overweight for a tackle and better framed for a guard, so there is that also. Nonetheless, he is first value. Some may see him as swing guard and tackle.
I have no problem with any team taking Smith in first round. The talent justifies the pick.

This has been an odd year for rating players. A guy like Smith is either listed as a top 20 talent or a mid rounder depending on which draft site you follow. I tend to agree with you. Based on what I have read about Tyler Smith, and watching some highlights, I think the guy is a 1st round to early 2nd round guy. I doubt very highly Smith makes it past the 2nd.

3/19/22: Some area scouts are super high on Smith and feel he could end up being a steal in the middle to late portion of the first round. Smith broke into the starting lineup in 2020 and played left tackle for Tulsa over the past two seasons. He is an excellent athlete with quickness to go along with big size and strength. Smith has a ton of upside to develop.

Here's what one area scout texted me about Smith months ago, "If Tyler Smith blows up his combine and workouts, he could go top 10. He's more gifted than the other offensive tackles in this class besides the N.C. State kid. Smith is 6-foot-5, 325 pounds with 34-plus-inch arms. As violent as he plays and the fact he can play guard also, I could see someone pushing him up because he's only 20 and smart also. He'll hover bottom 1/early 2 until workouts and then we'll see how he handles process.”
