I Like Haden a lot, but how long can he realistically play at a high level???

a contract can be structured in a way to essentially make it year to year.

Nah, we're good, let the season play out. If he plays good this season, then maybe sign him to a one year deal.

You have got to be kidding me, he should be being pushed by younger cb's
this preseason. so we can relieve the organization of some pressure to be able to
sign the TJ Watts, Minka Fitzpatricks and hoping Sam Howell's of the world.

I don’t see the harm in a one year extension and going year to year if it’s relatively low risk for the team. He surely can’t expect a multi year CB1 deal at this stage, that’s just not realistic at 32

They have no succession plan at CB so I expect they will either re-sign Haden or go after a free agent next offseason. Depends on how Sutton and Pierre play too I guess. It could go a number of different ways.

i could see a one year extension if he continues to play well this year. he's still the best we have until he's not. now i have heard layne is actually doing better in camp. we know pierre is. i'm keeping an eye on gilbert as well. i was very impressed with gilbert in that first game, we shall see. if nothing else haden will be a big help to these young players.

If Ben is truly done after this year, they don't need to extend any of the old timers, and in fact should probably start cleaning house and rebuilding.

they are already rebuilding. cleaning house isn't the way to go. vets help these young guys. harris, green, moore, friermuth, pierre, johnson, claypool, johnson, norwood, brooks, sutton, rader, harvin, UG3, loudermilk, davis, highsmith, roche, dotson........ all part of the rebuild. you can't rebuild a whole team in one or two drafts.

Hire him as a coach. If the young guys can't beat out a 33-year old Haden, they aren't part of the future.

I would give Haden a one-year, two-year deal at best. He's been great but I'm not sure I trust the 33-year-old to age well enough to keep playing at a high level.

It's easy to say I'm not sure he'll be good enough by then. They need to change their stance on doing contracts during the season and if by the end he's still playing well extend him. If not, don't. It's just as much of a gamble to expect a young guy to be able as an older guy to be able. They are both unknowns. Don't forget we probably lose Colbert by next year too. We will have enough holes to fill next year anyway.

Joe may want it, but Steelers aren't giving it.

I like Joe he's a great person and good player.

But, you got let him roll and use that money else where after this season is over.

Yeah, I thought Gilbert looked really good, as well. Looking forward to seeing if he can build on it in the next few games.

Yea the age factor. But, the experience factor is paramount. And he still plays at a high level!

Tear it up and extend him. One or two years. Lower the cap hit. A little more upfront.

Right now he is the ONLY CB with game after game after game after game experience as a starter.

I feel that Sutton and Pierre will excel given time.

    Then you have:

Justin Layne: 3rd year: Drafted by Steelers. Should be a camp cut.
Lafayette Pitts: 4th year: Spent time on several practice squads
    Shakur Brown: Rookie
    Mark Gilbert: Rookie

Antoine Brooks who was drafted by the Steelers and has 2 years experience is listed on the depth chart as the nickel. He is a safety.

I feel they will add a vet come cut down time. Justin Layne should be cut.

IF they give Haden an extension, I want to see the look on Steve Nelson’s face when it happens.

The team policy of not negotiating contracts during the season is the right one IMO. Once the games start you don't want your players concentrating on their contract. It also seems that an immovable deadline produces a sense of urgency on both sides, which in turn produces results, albeit at the last moment.

Laynes special teams experience will probably save him but at the moment it would seem that he is very much the #4 outside corner behind Haden, Sutton & Pierre. It’s disappointing given that he has that third round pedigree but corner can be a real hit or miss position in the draft. He will be lucky to see 150 defensive snaps unless there are a lot of injuries.

I don't disagree with what you are saying but maybe exceptions for vets with over 10 years could be made by seasons end. by that time the team knows if his play has declined or the player will know if he's ready for the next phase of his life.

Lets get the TJ Watt contract ironed out first before we throw brain cells at the over-30 CB extension. Love Haden but the timing is a little off.

Haden's agent goes and run to the media about him wanting a extension, like that will pressure the Steelers into doing it.
