This is like the bandaid that just won't give up and strangely Farve reminiscent too in a way.

This is a non story. Colbert made it clear right now they are only looking at this year. Heck, they haven’t ruled out anyone on the team now.

All the more reason I stated, multiple times this off season, that finding a QB will only become paramount when Big Ben is truly finished; his own decision, injury (God Forbid), deterioration or other factors. Until then, as I see it, future Draft Board is wide open at present while being way too early to speculate anything anyway.

Quarterback though is still going to be a talking point of discussion with or without Big Ben as he will not play forever.

There is no reason for Colbert or the team to rule anything in or out at this point.

If Ben is poor or has an injury ruined season I expect they’ll move on from him

If he is good and they think that he has another year of high level play left after 2021 they will sit down and look at how he might come back

There is no reason to make a decision on anything now either way

Today I'm against the idea, and who knows how I'd feel come March. However, I think it would be a bad idea to mark this a lame duck season for Ben, unless he said it himself.

i'm not sure why colbert thinks he can call the shots for next year when he said he's retiring. the bizarre part is he said he will retire after making our draft picks next year. wouldn't the new guy want to make his own draft picks? he has ridden bens coat tails since he got here and had very little if anything to do with picking ben.

Its very possible Ben comes back next yr, he'll want to come back. And I think Steeler management would embrace it. You'll have to drag Ben off on his shield before he quits. If they do well, he'll want to come back because he did well. If they do badly and he's healthy, he'll want to come back because he won't want to 'go out' on a bad season. The only way he won't come back is if he either physically can't play or is so clearly done that benching him is obvious.

And I see scant evidence that the team is eager to move on from him.

yep. they have no plan, no heir apparent. they whiffed with rudolph. Haskins maybe as a band aid place holder for a year or 2 , but not a long term solution. Need to go 4-13 and get the #2 QB. if not, we sit in the middle of pack. or go BIG TIME FA, but it will cost lots of money. not the steelers way. as we know , franchise QB's don't grow on trees. we missed on Lamar 4 years ago....he was there for the picking.

I see no reason Ben will provide much this year based on his decay rate. I was ready to move on. The team saw otherwise. So be it. I hope he plays well.

Ben needs to play at least 14 games this year, and still he playing well at the end of the regular season. If not, bringing him back will have been a mistake. If he’s playing well in January , then sure he’s to be considered for the following year.

Lamar wouldn't be the quarterback you see today if we had picked him. He'd probably still be sitting on our bench. Our offense isn't tooled for Lamar. It's tooled for Ben. Throw a mobile QB into our system and he's going to be limited by playcalling, coaching, and scheme.

I think that's the most logical point to be made on his future. First, he needs to stay healthy the entire season. Second, he can't tire out down the stretch. And third, he has to be able to manage the offense as well as give it a dynamic passing attack. If all those happen, there's no reason he shouldn't be back next season. Will all those things happen? Hell no. And there's your answer for next season.

Well, we might be thanking Green Bay for their role in Ben coming back next season and throwing a monkey wrench into the next few years. They gave Rodgers personnell decision power and brought back Randall Cobb for no other reason than Rodgers wanted him. In order to make Rodgers happy, they pulled the trigger with the Texans and now have a shiny, new receiver, who's on the wrong side of 30, coming off an injury season, and cost them more than a younger, healthier receiver would have. Ben's ears just perked up. What's Martavis Bryant doing these days?
