Gonna be funny after all this he signs for less than what he was making as a Steeler.

There is no longer a need at the position. Drafting Freiermuth put an end to that. No need to sign Jesse James to be your TE3. That would be a waste IMO.

They re-did Ebrons deal a few weeks back so he is going nowhere. It would actually cost them $3m to cut him now.

JJ will get a deal somewhere before the season, he is an ideal TE 2/3

Nelson is a funny one, he’s either asking too much or the interest is much cooler than he expected

If the Steelers brought in JJ it would mean they don't think Freiermuth is ready to contribute early on. They're kind of the same guy.

Also, JJ isn't going to play for league minimum.

I never thought he was all that good, he was better than Ole Artie, but i don't remember many splash plays from him.

Fell off some last year but 2019 was great. I would have kept him and cut Haden, who is four years older.

Post-Ben era is going to take a rebuild of the D.

I think Nelson wanted a new contract and CB1 money, and the Steelers just weren’t prepared to do that. He is a CB2 in my eyes, remember that second half against the Bills last year when Haden was missing with the concussion? Diggs made an absolute fool of him. Diggs is awesome of course, but there is no way he’d beat any other top corner to that extent.

I like Nelson as CB2 on about $8m per year but no more than that

I think the steelers will be in the free agent market for a corner next year and they’ll probably also draft somebody, maybe Pierre turns in to a starter if they are lucky

I hope they’re not the same guy. If so we wasted a 2nd rd pick.
Personally I think Freiermuth has a tremendous upside. Especially compared to JJ.

They aren’t the same guy, PF has the ability to be a big offensive weapon. I like James and would still welcome him back since you need 3 TE’s and I don’t think Rader and Gentry offer anything but James will want a bigger roll but then again, beggars can’t be choosy.

This is likely Ebron last year here and James would be the clear #2 going into next season.

Won’t happen though, money wise and plus the Steelers are probably content enough with Gentry and Rader as depth.

Yes, I would have kept him at that but I think he wanted a new deal and when he wasn’t getting what he wanted things soured. It is what it is at this stage and we move on.

I would think they would be able to sign Jesse James for about the same price as Gentry now.

Right now you would think the #3 TE on this team is going to have to know how to block with Freiermuth and Ebron as your top 2 guys.

if he was so good wouldn't detroit have kept him? it's not like they are loaded at the position either. this isn't jesse of 3 years ago. rader can block. gentry probably would have shown more if the injury didn't hit. a bad knee may end his time here. they did go out and sign several futures picks for the last spot. one of these guys should serve well as the 3rd guy. not only that but cowerd was used a lot as a TE in blocking schemes at chicago and we have used that quite extensively in the past. we also have watt that may finally figure into some heavier playtime in canada's offense. we shall see. i think it will be quite different then what we have been used to seeing from the steelers in the past.

he was under contract so a new deal wasn't really an option was it. did he really have that kind of game and leverage? i'd say no since he's unemployed right now.

They’re not taking one of those two guys off the field for a guy like JJ or Gentry unless there’s injury.

How was it not an option? It would be standard to extend a player going in to their last year.

I think negotiations started on a new contract and they were miles apart on terms, leading to the eventual outcome which was his release

    Nelson:

    He thought he was underpaid.

The Steelers thought he was overpaid.

    Nothing more. Nothing less.

Apparently he and 31 other teams are having the same thoughts.

Nelson over valued his way right out of a job. He'll probably sign with someone for less than hew would have made had he just kept his mouth shut and played out the '21 season here. Another moron. As far as JJ, I say good luck. Even at vet minimum is he really a better blocker than either Gentry or Rader? I could see a scenario where he doesn't sign wth anyone before the season starts, but gets picked up if someone needs a TE because of injuries or poor performance. He's no Ferrari, but he could help a team.
