They have 29 players under contract in 2022 including Ben, Ebron, and Juju who aren't playing with their current contract if they are back. The top 51 count on the cap. We need to sign Watt, Fitzpatrick, and Bush to big deals . Maybe they can make a uncharacteristic "big" move but they have a lot of contracts to sign to make a roster and keep the talent.

How many players is that counting? If they have $74 mil in cal space, but need to sign 30 more players, all that ‘space’ will disappear fast.

Doomsday having the most salary cap to spend in today's NFL without Marsha, Heinz should have been all over this.

Watt this year (hopefully), then Minkah, and Bush the following year. But the decision will have to me made on others in correspondence with them as well. Do you sign JuJu? If so you need to also make a decision on DJ and then Chase to follow (I believe same year as Bush). It is not immediate, but the next 2 years will determine the bedrock foundation of the future, key signings in the FA market (even mid level guys) and draft as they rebuild. Yes the cash is there, but we also have a lot of holes to fill, including more OL, CB's, and an aging DL.

plus the practice squad and money to carry into the season. watt and minka could cost around 30 mil.. 2-3 for the season and then the in coming draft picks. PS is what about 500,000. it will disappear quickly. farve will eat most of that.:hehehe::cool:

Along with the 29 players they have signed you have to add this years draft class and next years class plus UDFA’s. That’s at least another 15 players, so you are up to nearly 45, give or take.

Extending Watt & Minkah will take a good chunk of that money but they will have some to spend as well, for once. A corner will be on the shopping list no doubt if there is a good one available in free agency.

I would not like them to go off on a spending splurge and that is not their style in any case. The big question is QB if Ben retires, do they try Mason, the draft, free agency?

This is why I stated in previous posts, that the Steelers will be all IN on QB Sam Howell next year
    barring injury.

They should sign Ben to another 5 year deal. Let's get him locked in for the long term.

After Ben has the greatest season of his career and guides us to #7 he announces he is going to play as long as Brady, Steelers use all the monies on him.

Draft class, and restricted free agents, and we're up to about 50 or so. Maybe even 51.
But I'd argue Watt and Minkah are going to be closer to $45 than $30 million.
Top DE's/OLB's are in the $25 million range, with Bosa the highest at $27 million. Top Safety is Buddah Baker at $14.7 million. And you know Watt and Minkah are going to deserve more than those two. Guess it depends on how contracts are written.

It will be mason unless Ben goes down this year and mason fails. Possibly a draft pick or a vet backup unless Haskins shocks many and gets it together. If Mason gets a chance and fails then they will be more aggressive in the draft and/or free agency

Minkah is under contract for 2022 his fifth year option, they can wait until 2023 to sign him to a new contract, Bush needs to prove some things coming back from injury.

TJ Watt will be around $28m, Minkah $18m if I had to guess right now

Their cap charges could be lower however, maybe even significantly lower depending on how the deals are structured, they can backload and push money out to later years and let cap inflation take care of it.

Either way, I think they have scope to bring in at least one high profile FA next offseason, probably a DB, and a couple of other guys to round out the roster.

Hopefully they get something from this draft and next, if they don’t then no free agent they sign will make any difference anyway

Because they have 29 players under contract in 2022. Ben, JuJu, and Ebron's voidable years will void 5 days after the Super Bowl if they're not extended prior, so make that 26.

They need that money to field a team.

As above, when you take in two draft classes, UDFA’s and RFA’s, you’re adding up to 20 more cost controlled players to that 26 so the situation is not as bad as it seems at all. The quality of that 20 I’d a big unknown right now of course

How many UDFA's normally make a roster?

One or two if you are lucky each year, last year Pierre made it, this year hopefully Shakur Brown makes it.

There are normally a handful of restricted free agents too. Next season they can retain Spillane, Haskins, Brooks, Mondeux and several others on very manageable salaries if they choose to.

Dang, the Stains are well over the cap. I guess it is “Do or not do” with the cast they have now. At some point within about 2 years they will have to dismantle the team to sign Mayfield or let him walk to keep the rest of what they have built.
