The 3 OL lost (Villy, Feiler, Pouncey) were bad at run blocking last year, and the run game is an emphasis this coming season.

Alualu was a valuable player, but he'll be 34 to start the season. Should be able to find a run plugger for cheap.

If Highsmith continues his growth, he'll soon surpass Dupree.

Spillane is basically a cheaper Vince.

Hilton's playmaking will be missed, but not great in coverage.

Improved run game should keep the defense fresher and help close games.

That's all I got. Depth is still nil at several positions

again you guys should do some research on hiltons coverage ability. better then many think. he was ranked 18 of the top 25 corners.

We’ve had this conversation in the Bill Nunn forum and agreed after checking that he was graded highly but I have seen multiple times since they signed Sutton that he is the better coverage CB and that Hilton isn’t good at it and the only thing I think of is because he is limited to the slot and his coverage outside of that is no good. Sutton has the ability to move all over.

the slot is the harder position to play. you don't have the sidelines to help you in the slot. since 2007 most teams top WRs play about 60% of the time out of the slot. it has become a prime position because of that. it doesn't change the fact he is still ranked in the top 20 of corners and his coverage is good.

Maybe it’s just PFF wonky grading system to why he is graded highly.

Dulac isn’t the only one who is saying this about him. From his article:

Cam Sutton over Mike Hilton: Right decision

The decision to re-sign Sutton — only the second drafted cornerback to receive a second contract under Mike Tomlin – and let Hilton walk in free agency was the logical move to make.

Sutton’s versatility (he can play every cornerback position in the defense) and his intelligence on the field was deemed more worthy than signing Hilton.

The Steelers have never given a Hilton anything more than a one-year contract since signing him as an undrafted free agent in 2016 for this reason: They thought he was a solid, disruptive player along the line of scrimmage (especially for his size), but he had major problems in coverage (because of his size).

Hilton fit well as a blitzer in the Steelers’ fire-zone schemes, but he was limited where he could play on the field. The wrong system could be the wrong fit for Hilton.

This is a bit rosy -- he is probably 3-4 years to surpassing Dupree. Certainly won't happen while Ben is still here. Watt may be gone by then too.

It's harder to cover in the slot than the outside..

Not necessarily, he’d be dealing with bigger receivers on the outside.

thats fine, thats not what i am arguing as to who they kept. it's hiltons coverage isn't bad compared to other corners ranked highly. so sutton can play every position, he will have to man the slot, we have outside corners. hilton is one of the top 3 slot corners in the league. we could put anybody there but can they do what he did at that rate? thats the question. until haden or nelson go down, who care if he could play outside. did they ever try hilton there? no. he played outside for two years in college and at both safety spots. he will be missed on this defense. i don't care what dulac thinks. he's never played the slot either. :smiley1::cool:

All I’m saying is if all these people are saying Hilton isn’t that good in coverage, maybe he’s not.

Someone being bigger than you does not make them harder to cover. And yes it is harder to cover in the slot. You don't have the sideline as a boundary and most of the time guys in the slot get free releases as they are off the ball. I thought you knew football?

Wait, I’m sorry but did you just say size doesn’t matter? And you are calling out football knowledge?

The slot is a different skill, just because Hilton can play there doesn’t mean he would be good on the outside which is part of the reason that Sutton was signed, he’s more versatile.

Alex will surpass Bud's second season totals. Lock it in. And in 3-4 years, he'll make us forget Bud altogether, barring injury.

In their first year, Bud had 4 sacks, and 26 tackles 17(solo)/9(ast). Alex, in a pretty limited role, had 2 sacks, 48 tackles (30/18), and an int.

This is Kevin Colbert doing what Kevin Colbert usually does. Very seldom does he ever splurge into Day One of Free Agency to begin with. He instead plays the long game; finding more value in that than paying a player who may or may not work out.

I assumed everyone knew that, but after reading some post today, I believe, some just became fans a couple of years ago.

Many of the losses that we are mourning exemplify the diamonds in the rough that Colbert can find:

Fieler - Undrafted and waived twice by the Texans
Hilton - Undrafted and waived by the Jags and Pats
Alualu - Never lived up to expectations with the Jags. A non splashy FA signing by the Steelers.

    Have faith folks.

Skip to 3:00 where mathieu and sharpe start tlaking. He clearly explains just like I do to ypu the slot is much harder to cover than the outside. Also I never said size doesn't matter. I said someone being bigger does not automatically make you harder to cover. Look at how easily ramsey handcuffed dk Metcalf but struggled some with Diggs. Because Metcalf while bigger, can't run the whole tree and is not a good route runner.
