thats with 17 players signed. after the big five are added we will be around 129 mil. with 19 signed. so we need to sign 34 players plus next years draft and PS and about 3 to go into the season with, out of that. that allows for about 3.5 mil. per player. not bad but, QB either 1st rd. plus backups. starting guard. LT. RT. two starting corners, WR, TE, and depth everywhere. thats not going to come cheap. just saying what looks like a lot now will dwindle quickly.

Why can't they just cut him and then have him sign a new contract for 1 year?

If they sign Big Ben for anything but the league minimum they are idiots. This organization has lost its way Rooney saying they want to compete for the Super Bowl. What planet is he even on ? Ben won’t even bend down to take snaps over center. Good luck . I see a 5 win season coming with or with out Ben best case 8-8 sneak into Wild card then get blasted by a team whose coach coaches from his basement

Yes I did qualify that in a later post and I realise they won’t have anywhere near $170m available when the time comes, but still, if they draft well and fill some important spots with cost controlled rookies they will have proper money to spend for once. They could go get a good young corner to play alongside Minkah, get a tight end and just fill in spots where they need help.

Obviously if they botch the draft in the meantime none of it will matter. That is by far the most important source of players.

Just transfer the salaries of the Pirates to the Steelers salary cap. There should be money left over to go to the casino.

Really just doesn’t make any sense, he is completely the wrong guy for Canada so why make him OC? Just so they didn’t lose him and he can do his thing next year?

I’m sure Canada was aware Ben was coming back when he accepted the job. They probably always intended to bring him back, this posturing to the media may have been a way to send a message to Ben in relation to both money and his place in the franchise.

Canada will have to work with what he has and Ben will need to meet him at least halfway. It will be intriguing to see how it plays out.

Makes zero sense to me. He’s not the future and the likelihood of him leading us to the Super Bowl are virtually nil. Someone did a breakdown of the financials. The difference between staying and going is about 4.5 million. Would you rather have Ben for one more year or one of juju, Nelson...? For me it’s retaining one of our free agents.

Agree, it's nonsensical what they're doing. Unless they have some things not heard about yet, no logic is there.

Meh. He gives them a better chance to win than Rudolph. If everything goes right, they will be an 8 to 10 win team and maybe they can grab the final wild car spot, but I'm not holding my breath. If they are going to defer a pile of money for him, they are just kicking the can down the road and they will be hamstrung by it in the future. I heard Jerry Dulak say on The Fan yesterday that it was his belief that Art II wanted Ben back. Whatever. The organization must believe they have a chance to win a championship. Whatever.

That's why they have the draft, they should find a better RB, and draft some OL.

Ben can't give up and neither can art2 on ben. Bottom line. Both are in denial but they run the show. Canada makes very little sense but it all kind of goes hand in hand, there never seems to be a clear plan. Art loves Ben and he can do no wrong. Tomlin either. It hasn't had a clear plan since a art took over. He is more about the show. A franchise qb, a long term minority coach, whether they get the job done or not, it's not changing anytime soon with him. I guess ride along or go to another team like a couple of minority owners have done. They know they have no say in it.

I don`t see us making anything happen right now as O-line is needing big help and we got no running game. Wanting to compete every year and reality are two different things.

I would rather suffer a couple years rebuild based on what I saw in 2020 season. No real hope competing now.

Nope. Roethlisberger does not give a better chance to win at this point in his career. You're wrong.

Probably the post that makes the most sense. A post above stated the difference between his staying and leaving is 4.5 million, then said that money JuJu...nope. Looking at it another way..what QB are you going to get for 4.5 million better than Ben...none. I am not saying I like the move, but like you I do not think it sets the franchise back all that much, a poster in another forum said it sets the franchise back 5 years because they could sign a journeyman this year and draft Ben's replacement...just nonsense. A journeyman is not going to cost much less and is not going to get as many wins, they are going to draft who they like..if a QB is there that is the BPA on the board they will pull the trigger.

I do see more folly in this one more year thing though, that 19 million saved could have been used to keep some foundational player on D.

maybe a bit of hair splitting. Does Ben give them a better chance of winning than Mason? Yeah, maybe. Ben wins 9 games, Mason wins 8, maybe. But this ain’t no top AFC team in either case, So what’s the point? A feel good farewell tour for Ben, ending with a playoff licking vs Tn or LV or somebody? Do we owe Ben a chance to fail?

Keeping Ben means: We waste the value, whatever it is, of the Einsteinian Matt Canada offense, got a year,
We waste the value, whatever it is, of 1st round graded Mason Rudolph, who won’t stay this team If its gonna draft a QB in 2022.
Trust the leadership? They’re geniuses, I know, maybe their genius will be revealed in due time. Because nothing makes sense here.
