With age comes forgetfulness:( Having a conversation about games the Steelers played on Thanksgiving with some friends and they seem to think I'm wrong about this but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Cannot remember the year but we were the first game against Detroit (of course) and it went into OT. For the OT coin toss J. Bettis called heads. The coin toss was heads and the refs awarded the call to the Lions and we went on to lose. Pretty sure I remember Bettis looking at the ref with a what the F look on his face.

I only remember one other and it was I believe 1983 and the Lions whipped our ass to high heaven.

Thanks for bringing up the 1983 memory, which had been blocked out of my mind, but now the horrors of that game haunt me. Give me Rudolph, Dobbs, and Hodges any day over Malone and Stoudt.

The Steelers did play the Colts in Indy a few years ago on Thanksgiving night, and some psycho caught 3 Tds from Mr. Roethlisberger as the Steelers beat the Colts. It was especially sweet as I was able to attend the game.

You're right (as others have pointed out). That coin toss started a 5 game losing slide to close out the season.
I remember that game because I was celebrating thanksgiving alone in Hilton Head, just me and a bottle of Wild Turkey.

Didn't the ref say that Bettis called "Hea-tails", thus negating his call or something silly like that?

It was 1998 season, it was probably the highlight of the 1998 season. One of Cowhers worst years.

Charlie Batch was actually the QB for the Lions that year and in that game too.
Think this was the last time the Steelers faced Barry Sanders prior to his retirement too.

Time for some new Thanksgiving memories. This time with the Steelers carving up a bird, specifically Raven.

The infamous Coach T kickoff incident vs Baltimore also happened on Thanksgiving - 2014 I believe.

Yeah, that one is burned into my memory. Bettis was hugely unsuccessful calling heads or tails, but Cowher kept sending him out there "because he was due." The ref was anal type. He heard Bettis choking on a near inaudible "H" because he was second guessing himself because he was was always wrong, then clearly said TAILS. The coin was in the air, the ref did not have to be an anal a******. The NFL changed the rule for calling a coin toss because of this. Pretty horrible memory, but not top 10 for me.

Yes, after that incident, the NFL changed the rule so the call was made and confirmed before the ref flips the coin.
