Not sure if this was discussed, if so, point it out and I’ll merge the threads.

With baseball looking like it’s going to be a complete failure and no one taking actions like NY did to flatten the curve, football isn’t looking good either.

If it’s cancelled, I think there is a better than 50% chance Ben would retire. 39 years old, missing 2 seasons, I think he’d walk away.

He’s super competitive though so can’t rule him out for sure.

Ben didn't leave any money on the table. He'll be back unless the Rooneys retire him.

I don’t see the Steelers parting ways with him, even after 2 years away he would still be light years ahead of what they have behind him.

It would have to be Bens choice. Good point about the money though.

Good luck drafting a QB too with no college being played either.

He will walk away on his own terms and not let injury or cancelled season be the cause. While we can talk about his being competitive it may be like Coach Cowher's lame duck final season where it was more like going through the motions

I was thinking about that myself today and @Blast Furnace I think he would give it one last shot

If he does walk away, that extension they gave him and subsequent restructuring will have to go down as one of the worst NFL contracts ever.

Wait, when a player retires it still counts as dead money?

Sadly yes. It still does count against the cap I am afraid.

Did not give this much if any thought Blast. To say that Big Ben could be well on his way into the sunset is not a forgone conclusion. Besides, he will still get paid even if he does retire as that money counts against the cap.

That said, I would not blame him if he did.

he already said he wanted to play 3 more seasons, so even if this season was lost, that still leaves 2 more yrs

His dead money hit is $22m if he retires after the 2020 season and a cap saving of $19m. I think if that happens they would almost have to ask for some of his bonus money back.

I think he will play however. There is no way they would have restructured him without some assurances in relation to his intentions

I think Ben would still give it a go in 2021. The extended rehab time might actually benefit him. I assume he will be throwing and working out a lot during the free time. Looking at this glass half full, he might come into 2021 in the best health he has been in in a while.

No one could have predicted Covid though, throws a wrench in whatever assurances there may have been.

2 years is a loooong time to be away from football. As @TuRnDoWnForWaTT said though, he’d also be the healthiest he’s been in years.

NY flattened the curve by killing a ton of people. Right now, The death rate as % of population in NY is 5x that of FL and almost 10x that of TX. NYs death rate is about the highest in the nation. I hope like hell that other states aren't following their example.

Wax 25k more of the most vulnerable in FL and TX, and I guarantee you, their curves 'will flatten' too.

Ben won't retire. If thus season gets cancelled, Ben will back next yr. He has 20 million reason to do so.. Like a lot of players, Ben will be the last person to believe he's done. He'll have to be carried out on a stretcher first. Like Brady, Ben thinks hes invincible, until he learns the hard way, that he's not.

They need to just cancel it already. Look at the mlb, I’m happy as hell its back but it’s a ****show, teams having outbreaks, games postponed, Eloy Jiménez left the game sick. At this point the best team isn’t going to win it’s the team that can show up okay. Season seems forced. but that’s just my opinion

It certainly is forced, but that’s because there’s a ton of money at stake. I will admit that I will watch Steelers football, even if we’re trotting out JT Barrett at QB and Ryan Switzer as our #1 receiver for the week because other guys are in quarantine.

Funny, just before I read this, while watching baseball cancelation news, I thought: I wonder if we have already seen Ben’s last pass.

New York was the U.S. Guinea Pig, but that probably doesn't fit your agenda.

Would be a pretty bizarre ending to his career. Bet he didn’t have that on his bingo card.

I say no. The money and what could be a championship capable defense will keep him around.

Anything is possible but another year of healing he should be back. Its a bad situation and the season is hanging on to frayed string of even being played if not at all shortened.
