Is he really worth all that considering his age and his injuries? And should the Steelers be trying to land a free agent that can step right in to the starting role and keep momentum we might have going if Ben was to get hurt again? Should we be trying to land someone we could hand off to next season considering the hit that the Steelers will take with that 40 million. There is no restructuring Bens contract. It’s a done deal. If he’s on the roster next year it could cripple us for years to come if we have No back up plan. No back up quarterback. No money for viable starting QB.

What you talking about, Willis? To answer your question, is he worth it? No. To land a free agent, I assume you are asking FA QB, that answer is no as well. If Ben gets hurt in 2020, they will restructure his 2021 contract to where half the cap money will be split between 2021 and 2022. Its not ideal, but if the cap goes up $40 million after the new TV deals, it will not cripple the organization for years to come. The Steelers are not the Pirates after all. A good NFL organization can successfully turn over a roster in about three years. The crappy organizations, like Cleveland and Detroit, keep wading in their own crap hole. Crap is so thick and slick, it must be on the side walls, because they never get out.

The guaranteed money was already spent before Ben got his injury last year, it was just yet to determine how to distribute it. If he is on the roster next year or not, that 40 million has to be accounted. Likely they strike a one year extension next year that lets' them take a 20 mill or so hit in 2021, he retires and they remaining is counted as dead money in 2022. About the best you could hope. As for BU who could fill in, who? Who is out there that is willing to play for about a million bucks, that really could make a difference and is willing to sit for 2 years? I do not see anyone begging the team for a chance.

No the Steelers aren't going to sign Cam Newton or Jameis Winston.

What they will probably do is turn that entire $20m 2021 salary in to a signing bonus and extend in to 2022 as a throwaway year. Unless of course he retires.

There was talk of the salary cap ballooning to $240m in 2021 which would have solved the problem but you can forget that, after Covid19 they will be lucky if it doesn’t actually go down. He is on a very generous contract that they can’t really get out of so I hope he can still perform.

Would have been great if they had some surplus funds instead of being in cap hell. So they restructured him again as well as others to sign Alvin the one year wonder and Ebron and a few fillers. Now they are 5 over the cap. Can't see them signing Cam Heyward and him becoming a UFA after this year. Talk is restructuring Tuitt again who already has 3,340,750 the next three years from restructuring. Negative.

They should try to trade Juju, he won't be a Steeler next year. Also reach out and see if anyone is interested in the one year wonder.

And please get rid of McCullers. Waste of a roster spot. And their were stories about cuts and AluAlu was mentioned. That would be beyond stupid.

So Ben best perform as stated. Talk now is that the season might not start until Thanksgiving.

Maybe seeing Marsha is shouldering on in Tampa, Ben will want to show he still got it.

Cam is a bit of a conundrum, he is 31 now and the drop off in production is coming. I’ve no doubt they will extend him after the draft and after they pick up a few bargain free agents to fill the remaining holes but a huge 3-4 year deal could come back to haunt them.

If Ben can still play the Steelers are in win now mode in 2020, I don’t think trading juju makes sense in that regard. He should bounce back with Ben there and more help around him. I don’t know what you’d get for him anyway in a year where the draft is as deep as it is at WR, although the Vikings just got a serious haul for Diggs who is probably in an around the same level, with Juju being considerably younger. He is costing peanuts in 2020 so for me you keep him, they can always tag and trade him next year if they decide not to offer him a second deal.

I see your point on back up. But at the same time Ben gets hurt the season is over. No chance for anything.

Crippling for years to come May be exaggeration. If Ben gets hurt in 2020 the season is a wash and so is he. And we take a 20 million dollar hit for nothing. And we watch Rudolph become one of the worst starting quarterbacks in Steeler history. He’s a third string, no dress out, hold a clip board QB. I’m just worried. It’s not that easy to find a good quarterback. There are 32 teams in the league and never before and never after will you see 32 good starting quarterbacks. I guess we live with what we have, they already dropped the ball. No Super Bowls coming our way.

Well if your scenario happens, I hope the Steelers end up pretty bad, so they have a shot at Trevor Lawrence.

I cannot find the link now, do not know if it was Steelers depot, .com. or one of the papers (just showed up as one of the instant feeds on my phone). Anyway it was a breakdown on the Winston fascination among fans and media, and the teams with QB's with 20 million plus QB's. Besides the 2 or three they specified (Raiders, Titans and another I forget), no one really has a 'remarkable' or proven B/U that would make someone salivate. Season over with out Ben with current crop of QB's, likely. I do not think there is a realistic QB out there that would make that much of a difference. People like to point out Winston and his 30 TD's last year, but neglect to point out his 30 Int's, 8 or 9 passes that were dropped by defenders, and his 9 (I think) fumbles. It is nice to fantasize he would be an improvement, and perhaps he would have thrown 30 TD's, but just as likely could have thrown 20 and 40 int's here. Yes that is a stretch, but so is thinking he would make that much difference.

I think for one of the first times ever the NFL is approaching a situation where there are more serviceable QB’s than teams. As the standard of college football continues to improve there are better rookies coming in competing for starting spots. Newton & Winston are without jobs, Carr and Mariota will be battling for the starting job in Las Vegas, Dalton will probably be surplus to requirements in Cincinnati, as will Brisett in Indianapolis. This will put downward pressure on salaries at the position outside the very top guys and the Steelers should be able to pick up a decent bridge QB for reasonable money when Ben goes. Getting the next franchise guy will be the big question then if Mason does not take a big step forward in the meantime.

The same stuff people were saying last season when Ben got hurt, they thought the Steelers were going to get a top 10 pick, it didn't happen in 2019 and it won't happen in 2020.

It would be nice if the Steelers could get Trevor Lawrence next year. Too bad Steelers will have no shot at him.... they will end up a Tomlin-esque 7-10 or 8-9.

If they didn’t trade for Minkah they probably would of. The defense was looking shaky as it has been recently until he showed up.

Yeah let's win 2-3 games next season just for a shot at Lawrence, I would rather make the playoffs.
