More run attempts couldn't have hurt, imo. At least mix it up, put the QB under center more, even try wildcat (since it's in the arsenal), play action...?

I agree. We all hated wildcat but when you have nothing else...

I wouldn't call 90's to 2003 purgatory. From 92 to 2003 we made the playoffs 8 times, the AFCC 4 times and the Super Bowl once. I will take that type of purgatory at this point.

I fear we may be headed for 1980's purgatory. It's hard to do anything without a franchise QB, and I'm not sure we have one at this point. even if Ben does return next season, will he be the same Ben after a year off at his age?

yeah i meant purgatory as no super bowl wins. 90's had success but no wins, 80's i heard were bad.

Yeah I know what you mean. My standards are already lower now. LOL Even consistent playoff runs seems like a pipe dream at this point. :tequila:

I don't buy into these kinds of posts, This , this, this, this, and this will happen...Yep, probably so, But so will it for EVERY other team, Some worse off than us...And the guys leaving will be replaced by guys in the draft ( which we do pretty good at ) with a few trades sprinkled in.....

Just like EVERY other team...Once Ben is off the books " soon, maybe next year " will free up a boatload of money...I still think we will need ANOTHER QB, But, like the rest of us will be watching these last 5 games...

And lastly yes, Not only is Mason young and have a depleted RB core, WR core, and dare I say it, **** OL....HE has to be the one that says " Ok Boys, Idc about ANY of those excuses... I'm the QB, I'm the leader, climb on my back and lets go!

He's going to have to greatly improve...highly unlikely imo, But we still have time to evaluate...

    Go Steelers!

Cincinnati is a turning point game? Playing the worst team in the league is supposed to tell us something? That's the measuring stick? If so, the season is over.

And why would you need to see the upcoming draft to know if MR is the future? As of right now, he's not. His performance will dictate whether he has a place. His performance will drive the draft for us as well.

The pieces of the defense currently there won't be there next season. We'll retain good pieces, a good core. But we still need supporting cast to step up.

And finally, our offense doesn't need firepower. It needs an OL coach and a capable center. There's no guarantee that Pouncey will be back or even Ben, for that matter. Firepower? Don't talk to me about firepower when we don't even have a competent OL.

I’m a little confused by what you’re saying. Are you criticizing MR and ready to say he’s not the answer, while also deeming his OL incompetent. I mean after all they are the biggest factor in a QBs success. I agree offensive weapons are second and even they haven’t been so great ( injury and performance) Don’t forget to add a glorified QB coach as a OC.

I think it's pretty clear. MR isn't playing as if he's the future of the franchise. I don't want the future qb of the Steelers to not be able to hit a crossing route or put any touch on a deep ball. Right now, he can't. That's what I mean by his performance. The OL has nothing to do with him not being accurate. I'm not considering the passes where he's under duress.

And yes, I'm saying the OL is a trainwreck at the same time.

When a quarterback is under pressure most of the game, it does often affect his play even on plays when there is a clean pocket. Pressure accelerates the clock in a quarterback's head for every play, not just the ones with a pass rusher in his face.

That said, Rudolph sucked against the Browns. You can talk about the rest of the offense all you want, but Rudolph played horribly.

To me he’s playing pretty much like a young QB with everything that is going against him should be playing. The Cleveland game not withstanding. He has shown glimpses both good and bad . He’s hit on some slants and deep balls and missed on some . Again a lot of deficiencies to overcome. The most important OL that definitely has a impact on accuracy. Not having a clean pocket and time causes erratic throws.
Seven games isn’t nearly enough time to make a judgement on his ability. IMO

What you're saying isn't wrong, but you're missing my point. Mason Rudolph was the BEST senior quarterback in ALL of college football just before being drafted by the Steelers. His arm was responsible for the ACCURATE throws that James Washington caught on the way to becoming the BEST wideout in college that same season.

The qb under center for the Steelers is not living up to the standard he set in college. He could not have compiled the numbers and accolades in college if he was missing targets the way he is now. And he has missed targets with a clean pocket and time to throw.

I'll grant him his first start as an outlier. But after that, he should have looked more competent. Only 7 games? I made a judgement on his ability after 3. He hasn't passed the smell test. And I was a huge fan of his and thought we got Ben's replacement when we drafted him. I thought we hit the jackpot with him. So far, I'm wondering where the dude I saw in college is. Because that dude ain't playing for the Steelers.

Look everyone, it's Tony Robbins. You a quarterback whisperer now? While you're rooting around in MR's head, check for his use of dangling participles.

At the risk of getting on your radar and suffering through 175 of your responses telling everyone what I really meant to say, I'll thank you and humbly accept your permission to talk about whatever I want.

I know!! I hate it!! He looked like he had all the goods. Family pedigree, more-than-solid college resume, smart, prototypical size, and even good character. Total package.

And none of this seems to big for him. He has taken a crap-ton of abuse on the field so far. Makeshift line, no running game, you name it. He doesn't seem phased by it.

SO WHY CAN'T HE MAKE THE NECESSARY THROWS? I don't have enough hair left on my head to pull any out. He's going to make me start tugging at my short and curlies before long. And to say that would be an ugly sight is an understatement. :getsick:
