I too dont understand why Grimble was given such a nice contract when he has shown nothing!!!!

That said they did attempt to acquire a TE on the waiver wire earlier in the season possibly to replace Grimble then.

No, I think he gambled that Vance would stay healthy and lost.

And as for others saying this is a one year rental, why? Check out his numbers, he won't come close to costing what James did. I'm sure they made this trade with the intention of signing him to an extension.

Agreed. They spent more then twice that on grimble.

We already used our first rd.pick next year and we picked Fitzpatrick. We used Oakland's 5th and got vannett. The good thing is we get to use them and don't have to waste them learning in their rookie year.

I'm so glad we have all these extra picks laying around to fill needs when we are 0-3!!! I was just talking about this **** yesterday. God forbid they use those picks to move up and get higher quality draft picks or players they are targeting before they get pillaged a few picks before them. I forgot this is the same organization that thought swapping 1st, losing a 2nd, AB, and Bell to move up 10 spots was an earth shattering move.

I’ve taken a look at the numbers. While your numbers are off it isn’t by much....

If you compare Jesse to Vannett they are real close physically and athletically. Jesse is a more accomplished and productive receiver and that really helped his contract #’s..... I think those numbers are Misleading because the Steelers use their TE much more than Seattle has and I also think Vannett is actually the better TE. I think he has better hands, tougher, and is a bit quicker, he is probably a little better blocker too.

Don’t get me wrong, Vannett isn’t Gronk in any way!!! He isn’t fast, will go down on first contact and isn’t a Great blocker like Heath but he isn’t bad either and when he does go down he maintains possession.

He will improve the roster and the TE room and be the #2 TE we need. And signing him to a deal similar to Jesse’s is worth it, 700k this year with a 4 yr 20 mil extension would be very smart.

He's the baby version, so just likes a good buzz, says "Ouch that hurt"!! a lot, but isn't injured, and makes corny cereals.

What are the odds that two fifth round picks are going to make the team and contribute? I have no problem with this, it's basically Dobbs for Vannett.

That's one of those gotcha comments which sounds good but really isn't.

Trading Dobbs for a TE was suggested by some before the season started. The other is being said after starting 0-3, having the HoF QB out for the season, and getting a TE who is an upcoming FA. In short, the circumstances are completely different.

The problem is they gave up an asset for the future to rent a backup-level player for only this season when the team is 0-3 and lost Roethlisberger. It is extremely unlikely that this team makes the playoffs, so spending assets in such a short-sighted manner makes little sense.

I can't believe they would do this without having already agreed in principle to extend him at least 2 years.Otherwise, giving a 5th for a rent-a-player during a doomed season is ridiculous and completely irresponsible.

They are throwing away assets for nothing. It's not like this is some great player they are adding, either. This is a backup-level player. At 0-3 with no Roethlisberger, they should not be dealing assets for the future for a rental player.

That is exactly the point. I'm not saying you give up on the season entirely, but at some point you've got to question sending good resources after bad if the help you get won't be here past this current season.

They needed veteran TE depth, so fans complain when the team isn't aggressive in making trades, and then they complain when the team does make trades .

Varrett set career highs last year with 29 receptions for 269 yards and you think he is a "great tight end?"

Of course you do. You think Matakevich is good.

This argument was flawed the first time somebody trotted it out there and it is even moreso now. Those previous complaints came in the offseason or when the team was in contention. This team is 0-3 and facing the rest of the season without Roethlisberger. The circumstances have changed dramatically. Your comment fails to take that into account.

Then sign him in the offseason without giving up the asset for him.

We have no evidence that they have such an agreement in place. If they wanted him for the future, they could have waited until the offseason and signed him.

They only upgraded the tight end position for this season. He is a free agent when the season ends. They may end up re-signing him, but they did not get any value beyond 2019 in this trade.

I agree, but don't see why Vannett and his agent would agree to an extension now unless its for at least what Jesse James got with Detroit, if not more. Last year James had 30 receptions for 423 yds and 2 TDs. Vannett last year had 29 receptions for 269 yds and 3 TDs. Vannett has a chance now to improve on those numbers. If I were he and his agent I'd wait at a couple of games before deciding what to do. If he's targeted regularly his motivation to sign an affordable extension is nil.

If the Steelers do sign him to an extension with about $10M guaranteed which is what James got, it's basically an admission that they goofed by not re-signing James and that goof saved them nothing salary-wise and cost a 5th rounder in the process.

Most of that is fair, though I will say that over the course of his career, James had done more than Vannett has done to this point.

Well what I'm saying is, isn't it a common thing for a team to make sure that they can re-sign that player to an extension before they agree to finalize the trade?

Nobody knows if they have that type of agreement, but to me, if they didn't already try to work that out with his agent before the trade was finalized, then that's ridiculous.

And do what with an obvious need at TE?
