maybe its for the interior LB'ers which means olsavsky not porter. the worse part is butler was a LB and LB coach. for me both could go along with butler right now.

Agreed. Hiring Herman appears to be a tacit admission that Butler, Porter and Bradley don't have "the wherewithal to get it done", to quote The Emperor. I don't think this defense has an abundance of talent, but it could be solid if it were coached up. I think all three "need to get on with their life's work" after the season, again dropping Emperor speak.

Wait, is this a permanent hire or just for this week?

If this is an official hire this wreaks of desperation. The entire coaching staff is admitting they are not capable.

So weird this wouldn’t be a 3-4 guy?

I know many will disagree but we had the guy to beat the Pats, at least he started figuring it out; Lebeau. The problem DL had was Tomlin cant draft ****...well literally he can but he cant draft talent and DL ran out of talent. Look what he did to the Titan defense. Players have been changed and they are getting the same result. Time to change some coaches or the coach.

Uh... the giants are a perennial 5-11 team.... how is this ever viewed as “progress” or “a move in the right direction”

In reality it's just one of those moves to help short term and possibly playoffs.

The problem is our drafting and the wrong personel being played.

Maybe he planted two undercover drones to spy on them in practice :to keep order:

I would give Bradley a pass. Among those that need purged, I would give him another year, Dunbar the same.

Now, Porter, Olsavsky and Butler on the other hand?

3 straight losses and NE,NO next up, now's the time to be desperate.
I doubt this move is the coaching staff's choice.

Your much more forgiving then I am I see the secondary coaching to be very weak. They have tackled a little better but coverage is still mediocre and there are glaring missed assignments at least once or twice a game. Having Burns a first rd pick regress the way he has is troublesome and that does not reflect well on Bradley.

Agreed. That's why I don't see the benefit of bringing in a coach that helped coach a 4-3 like the Giants ran...

I have the same feeling. I am guessing this decision came down from the top. It is kinda of unique to bring in an interim coach for the defense and not release another. In fact I would assume this is a first in the NFL

You sure about that? Because they've been soo successful in beating the Pats the other way :dancing:
Maybe they'll unveil their new $2 bill defense that has 11 DBs and nothing else. I'd try anything to beat this damn team. :lolol:

The way article is written it sounds like it is just a one week consultant job?

Are we sure this is a full-time hire?

So the Steelers believe one week of an outside coach will fix everything they couldn't accomplished in how many seasons ? I don't mind the move but, seems it will already confuse an already confused group of guys.
If this guy is needed, what does this say about our current coaches ? Answer : they can't do their job.
Add into the mix, who is running our defense ? Is it Butler, Tomlin ? And why keep Butler if Tomlin feels he needs to stick his nose into the works ?
Maybe Tomlin needs number one drafted players at every position to be successful? Never going to happen. If the new standard is no losing seasons then this team has arrived.
Granted, if our kicker did his job the Steelers would not be in the bind they are in. If the defense or lets call out the secondary wouldn't give up chunks of yards in the 4th quarters, this team wouldn't be in bad shape.
I'm not even asking for the steel curtain or 60 minute men. This defense cant even be respectable .
Only way we can win is out score other teams.
When Ben retires the Rooney should clear the slate of coaches except for Munchuck. He is the only coach earning his check. Receivers coach too.

If I'm doing the math right, Herrmann has 4 wins and 6 losses vs the Pats (2-5 w/Jets, 2-1 w/Giants).
Not exactly a 'Brady Killer' (not that you said he was) but better than the Steelers have done against Brady in his career.
This article says they brought him in 'for Patriots week' so I don't think this is a permanent hire (again, not that you said it was), but if the Steelers D gets the win, maybe it should be.:sneak:

They'd be better off bringing in Michael Strahan and Kelly Ripa

Lebeau never had a clue how to beat Brady even going back to the Cowher years. And when he did sorta figure it out that one year, he stubbornly went back to his old ways. What did he do for the Titans, they were average or bad in his tenure there? Vrabel comes in this year, brings in his own DC and they beat the Pats this year. Coincidence? If the Steelers weren't so stubborn they would have hired Dean Pees who has experience beating them.

The fact is that the defenses of Lebeau and Dom Capers do not work in today's NFL.
