I don't get it either. I was wondering if it was to generate cap space for an additional signing, but I checked the dollars and we take a $235k dead money hit that eliminates almost all of the salary savings.

The only thing that pops into mind is that they may want to have both TEs be more of a downfield receiving threat in 12 personnel.

While I don't disagree with you on his blocking ability...the threat of him as a pass catcher was laughable....not that he couldn't do it but we never threw him the ball he wasn't a threat to a defense. Maybe if we utilized him more as a receiver it wouldn't be such a dead giveaway that it was a run 99% of the time when he came in the game....while I agree the blocking of the other TEs isn't up to what DJ can do the fact that they offer more of a element of surprise than DJ did....which can keep a D more off balance and not keying the run when we go multiple TEs...we all have our opinions and valid reasons why we would of liked to see the cuts go a little differently.....All we can do is hope the coaches know what they are doing...sometimes the make me really wonder.....

David Johnson getting cutted surprised me as well. :hmm:

Did not see that coming. Dude is superb at sealing the outside rushers on stretch runs and has shown he can catch some passes when needed.

Xaiver Grimble has the hands... for catching. For blocking, there were some ugly moments in the NFL preseason, against the Colts most notably lead blocking for Terrell Watson.

I will say this, so thrilled Brian Allen made it though. :smiley1:

One more thing as I just got off of work.

Colin Holba cut? That also surprised me.

How about he wasn't that good and wasn't going to get any better as a reason to cut him?

I don't care about his ability as a pass catcher.

It was not run 99% of the time he was in their. We run a very heavy run/pass option system out of 2 TE set. It's a core of Haley's playbook. It gives Ben the option based on the safeties and mike. DJ was a fantastic edge blocker who was also capable of getting to the 2nd level on Mike's and Sam's. When our opponents brought safeties down to account for our dominate run game, it would leave one of our outside guys singled up (which will be even more deadly with Bryant).

DJ had a role, and it was important. It wasn't flashy. It wasn't fantasy football. But it was a core element of our one of our packages.

I'm not saying your wrong....we'll see what happens. I can almost guarantee if we made a mistake we will have a chance to fix it....pretty sure he won't be in very high demand. Time will tell....same as some of our other choices.

He was head and shoulders better as a blocker than our other TEs. As others have stated, he had a key role that's now unfilled.

My only hope was that it was some weird cap thing... like they cut him, do something else (tj ward), and then re-sign DJ for minimum and cut Grimble... but that's very unlikely.

I'll feel a little better if we get McGee on our PS, and then realize our mistake a few weeks in and cut Grimble.

TE's that can block but not a threat to catch the ball really have little value in today's game IMO. The guy had 7 catches last year. Everyone knew when he was in there he was blocking. Might as well put in a 6th lineman who is a better blocker.

Lol Holba got cut, waste of a pick, just like I said. What a shame. "Best LS in the draft" my ***. Can pick any LS up off the street.

Not to compare Haley's scheme with what the Pats were running, but does anyone remember how the Pats were running their 12 personnel with Gronk and Hernandez?

Is Vance a better blocker than we think?

    From a blocking perspective out of 10, I'd put Vance as a 4, James as a 6 and Grimble as a 1. DJ was probably a 7. Maybe 8.

    From a receiving perspective out of 10, I'd go Vance a 6, James a 4 and Grimble a 5. DJ was a 1, if not 0.

Arbitrary numbers I know but decently accurate.

We definitely traded blocking for receiving. But why? Stay tuned I guess.

Yup. I hope the Sepulveda and Holba mistakes resonate like a giant sized gong in Colbert's head. Likewise with he Aguayo pick by the Bucs last year.

That's utter nonsense. Most teams keep a blocking specific TE.

There Is huge difference between an additional OT on the end of the line, and a TE can block the edge from a 3 point stance or motion across the formation and block a SS in the box, or lineup in the backfield as an h-back who has to read the zone and choose his gap to get to the mike. They are not the same position/player/skill.

If you look around the NFL today....I think you will realize fans put to much on the bottom dwellers of the NFL.....Every team has cut tons of people....and about 5 or 6 of those are having this said about them on a team board "What a mistake...he will get picked up..never make it to PS"

Yet for the most part they all do....and you would be hard pressed to even know who those players are just by reading their names on the cut list.

That being said...I would not mind Dwight Lowery as Safety depth.

Sutton needs to be on the 53 man roster at 4pm tomorrow, to be eligible to return from IR.
I wonder how that works with Bell? Can they delay putting him on the active roster, so that they can stash Sutton on IR?
If they place Sutton on IR before tomorrow 4PM he would not be eligible to return.

many don't keep a FB though and use that blocking TE in that capacity. it can at least make defenses think about more options with pass catchers as an option more than 95% just blocker. it at least gives defenses some more to have to defend.

I was over DJ years ago just like Golden now, but DJ
did carve out a nice little niche for himself after coming back. Kind of like Willie gay.... golden had a decent run down the stretch a couple years ago but is disappointing overall. Gay is spent love the dude but it's time.

TE spot as well as the secondary gonna be interesting but we already knew that on the latter

Dwight Lowery would be an upgrade, but now that they have signed Wilcox, I'm not sure they will keep looking. Lowery and other veterans probably won't be signed until after Week 1.

The bottom end of the roster will continue to change throughout the season.
