I was as big a fan of Golson as there was when he was coming out. I was thrilled we got him in the 2nd round.... but believing that he's out best DB... Seriously?

This is worse than pre NFL snap Eli Rogers hype.

I considered Burns, I wouldn't have a problem with someone saying Davis as well, as we don't know what we have in either yet. I like Golsons ability to take away the football, something this defense sorely lacks.

The longer Golson is away from the game, the harder it will be for him to realize his potential.

I just got into the draft and evaluating players about 5 years ago, never cared about the offseason but now I love it and I get more and more humbled each year. Fans so cock sure of their ability to evaluate talent need to get over themselves.

We've actually seen Burns/Davis make NFL plays, against NFL competition. Golson, despite all his measurable talent and college tape, is nothing more than a prospect with serious long term injury concerns.

It's really absurd to call him our best DB.

PS Ross Cockrell and Mike Mitchell get no respect. Mike Mitchell is a very good Safety. Like borderline pro bowl. And Ross Cockrell has done nothing but show the type of development that you want to see out of a 4th rounder. His play on AJ last week was a thing of beauty. If you don't have the NFL.com ALL 22 package, I highly recommend it. Trying to judge CB/DB play without that view is fruitless. Cockrell is a high IQ football player, with good NFL skill, and borderline adequate athleticism. Everything he lacks in athletic ability, he makes up for upstairs. His route recognition and zone awareness are a perfect fit in our defense. Is his tackling questionable? Yup. Is he able to press/jam? Nope, he's got alligator arms. Can he shut down an elite WR with some help? Yea.... he did. And that makes him a far better CB than Golson who has done literally nothing in an NFL jersey.

Cockrell/Mitchell took AJ out of the game. For comparison's sake, how did Ike/Clark do on AJ in the past?

    Respect.

Our secondary doesn't have shut down man corners (yet) or ball hawking single high safeties.... but it's better than people give the individuals credit for.

Golson  is simply irrelevant right now.

i got to say cockrell played AJ pretty well last year too. i do agree golson is potential but it better come soon. the longer he sits the less that potential will be valuable. others will simply pass him with knowledge and the ability of gelling with what they have on the field. that's not an easy thing to gain during the short weeks of game prep during the season.

I don't disagree with any of that assessment about the secondary, I've defended them myself on a number occasions. I like Cockrell and Mitchell, I love Gay but none are so good that its unthinkable that Golson can't be better.

I'm talking strictly talent level, of course Goslon isn't better if you threw him on the field tomorrow. As i said to Jeh in another thread, my thinking is more towards next season and I'd like to see them do what they can this year to get his development going, he's already lost too much time.

Put it this way, say he's ready to start practicing after 8 weeks and he's impressing the coaches after 4 weeks of practice, now we are at week 12, why wouldn't you get him some game time reps? Why wait until an injury and then ask him to step in with no real game time experience.

I'll agree with @RPO IZSB@RPO IZSB on Cockerill, caught way too much heat in the past few weeks.

I'm still not sold on Mitchell though. I can see he's developed since he's been here, need to see more though before I'd agree he was near pro bowl. Hopefully will be persuaded tonight...

I like what I've been seeing from this young back field.
I think Cockrell has earned the play time and we may have found something in this Davis.
    Artie has played decent.

Golson is on the roster and needs to get in there this year.
Want to see him bring his athleticism to this secondary.
    IMHO
