what scares me with him is when he gets the big money. athletically he's great but mentally, i'm not sure it really hit home yet. add alot of dough and i could see him falling back into the same fold. just a gut feeling after watching the interview with him. seems like a guy given a huge reprieve and now saying what they want to hear, but i'm not sure the message was fully received. now throw a bunch of money his way and it could spell trouble. i'd feel more comfortable with a guy like nassib or perry or calhoun or ogbah or kaufusi, maybe even tapper or lowery. lots of other ways to go instead.

i was a fan of spence but man i'd hate to take that chance and be wrong when there are other choices so close in quality play.

Who I am not a fan of? Let us see:

    Robert Nkemdiche:

Top interior lineman in the draft in terms of talent alone; UDFA otherwise. Nevermind his character and desire concerns, his ability to hold the point of attack is atrocious... and the odd part is that he has the functional strength to do it too. He just elects not to.

    Noah Spence:

Much like Nkemdiche. However, while Nkemdiche is the superior talent, Spence is the superior technichan. His athletic ability is in question. If anything, a slight upgrade from Jarvis.

Any cornerback not named Vernon Hargreaves III, Jalen Ramsey or William Jackson III in Round One:

Not that Pittsburgh was going to given their criteria for corner backs but disclosing it regardless. Eli Apple nor Mackensie Alexander will be applicable due to their lack of inexperience. Pittsburgh needs an impact defensive player; cornerback or otherwise.

    Kamelia Correa:

Great edge rusher but not round one worthy. Limited in coverage and is quick twitch only. Pittsburgh edge rushers must do more than pin their eats.

    Any offensive lineman:

This draft will have more lineman later on. In addition, Pittsburgh's offense is stacked. More like a luxury to me.

Any Safety not named Karl Joseph:

From Vonn Bell to TJ Green, each does have some good traits but are not the rare complete package Karl is. Not worth doing in my opinion.

    Ashawn Robinson:

While his floor and versatility are superior in comparison to Billings, his motor and desire are either on par with Nkemdiche or even worse. Even with John Mitchell coaching him, between him and Jarran Reed, Reed's desire is greater despite his ceiling being slightly lower. Either way, will not matter in either players case.

    Jarran Reed:

Run stuff lineman only. Daniel McCullers is already that despite his lack of tech. While Reed is plug and play, if this were the Hokie scheme used by Butler, Reed is the guy you want. However, now that Pittsburgh defensive lineman need to accomplish so much more, Reed does not fit.

    Chris Jones:

Chris Jones is the "Bud Dupree" of the 2016 class for defensive lineman. In my opinion, he has the potential to surpass even DeForest Buckner and his athletic talent rivals Nkemdiche's without the baggage. "If you are raving about him, then why would not draft him AskQuestionsLater?" I here you asking. Simple, Chris Jones is a five tech. only. Pittsburgh still has a void to full due to the departure of Steve McClendon and Chris will not fix that.

    Leonard Floyd:

Jarvis Jones with more athletic upside; not even close towards fitting the Steelers criteria for edge rushers... pass.

    Emmanuel Ogbah:

Take Bud Dupree but add slightly more polish and subtract that transcendent explosive power, good coverage skills, rock solid POS ability and solid versatility. A value of -3. No thanks.

    Any Quarterback; regardless of round:

Ben's replacment is not in this draft. Not worth spending a pick.

There are more trust me. These guys however, are the "Red Bandits" Pittsburgh must avoid.

What I meant was that a lot of OSU players got in trouble for using ecstasy (including Bosa) yet no one else got kicked off the team. Tells me there's more to it with Spence aside from the drug use.

Spence failed multiple drug tests, that's why he was booted from the team.

I dont want Eli Apple. He cant cover, cant tackle and waaaaay too grabby. Seems like a big Ike Taylor clone project.

I dont want Mackensie Alexander.. reminds me of Josh Norman. Talks to much and has played vs bad qbs that made him look better than the numerous times he left WRs wide open, when the QB couldnt get the WRs the ball.

I dont want Jeremy Cash. Ive seen all his tape. He's just a mini OLB. He cant cover for ****, and all of his "plays", are behind the line of scrimmage. He literally blitzed on 99% of the passing play in college.

I dont want Jayron Kearse. 2 words.. OJ HOWARD.

I dont want a OT.. we have 4 on our team.

I dont want a OG.. we have 4 on our team.

I dont want a TE.. we have 3 on our team.

And if he isnt Janarion Grant or Jakeem Grant.. I dont want a WR neither, if he's not a KR/PR specialist like those 2.

Umm.. Noah Spence is the best Edge rusher in this draft. You compared him to bein SLIGHTLY better than Jarvis?? Did you see him at the senior bowl?? NO ONE could guard him.

You are right. In terms of his technique, Noah Spence is a prime choice for an edge rusher. My issue lies in everything else. Never mind his 40 time, which I do not pay attention to, his short shuttle and 3 cone were disappointing to me. Steelers linebackers not only posses a good usage off edge rushing skills and be explosive, they also need to drop into coverage and set the edge; more important now than due to the arrival of Keith Butler's Eagle scheme which now allocates the "Sam" and "Will" linebackers to two gap (usually the C gap since Pittsburgh's DE cover the B's). Noah can rush the passer, but I question his ability to set the edge and drop into coverage.

If anything, I would rather want someone like Shilquile Calhoun. While he is not a natural bender, he can bend the edge better than Noah and has a slight drop in pass rush skills.

I think you made a good post and obviously have researched college players fairly thoroughly.

I do think Spence will be a quality OLB though. The other picks you referenced made sense.

Spence would have had a year to get stronger and learn the defense before taking over from a retired Harrison and possibly departed Jarvis.

OLB remains an issue for the 4th straight year and I did like Spence.

I also think Spence was better suited to 3-4 OLB. He's going to be lined up directly in front of OTs in the 4-3 in TB. Too bad because he could be a helluva edge rusher but I don't think he will be as effective now. As far as coverage I don't think Spence is any slower than Debo but would need time to learn to drop.
