Ahh... This could provoke interesting discussion. There are folks out here who think a single bad playoff game was the only time he's taken snaps in his entire career, and that his inability to put the Houston offense on his shoulders against a team that had won 10 in a row with great defense makes him incapable of being a good backup QB. Never mind that he had a 90 passer rating, 19 TDs vs 7 ints with very few weapons. Never mind that he was the QB for Cleveland during the only stretch of time when they've been competitive in recent years.

Personally, I'd love to have him as our backup QB. He's a proven NFL QB, and he's never played with more than one good weapon in the passing game. He could win 50-75% of games if Ben had to sit with an injury for mutiple games again. That's what you want in a backup.

If Bill O'Brien doesn't think he's worth having, I'm with him. One thing O'Brien knows is quarterbacks.

He'd be a great backup QB. Hell, yes, I'd take him.

And Steel_Elvis is right; plenty of haters around.

He'd make a solid backup. Someone will want to pay him more than we will, though.

If we could get him cheap I'd be in favor of it. I like him better than Landry for a spot start or two (hopefully none will be needed).

There's more to it than that. He was due just under $5 million for 2016, and Houston wasn't going to pay that for a backup. Also, the owner wanted a top starter, and not a guy who is a borderline starter. O'Brien has to answer to his owner.

If not Hoyer, who? We have only Landry Jones and a camp arm as backups right now.

I too would rather have him over Bruce and........Vick .. I think we have the inside track since he was once on our roster he knows our organization and we offer a chance for a ring......

This has been brought up before hell no Hoyer is hot garbage, his own WR DeAndre Hopkins in that playoff loss was saying get this MFer out of the game. He can go be a backup someplace else, re-sign Gradkowski over that bum.

Oh boy, BFT will be locking horns with you shortly, I bet :lolol:

That playoff game wasn't just bad, it was putrid, how did he do the rest of the season for them? I thought I recalled him struggling last year and Houston flip flopping between him and another guy. Not sure.

He might be worth kicking the tires on.

*edit, never mind my question, skimmed over your post.

I think someone with big question marks at QB will have the inside track. I think there are teams out there who may want him as a fallback starter. Maybe the Jets.

Yeah, that's the possible flip side...... He doesn't want to be a backup to Ben and wants a chance to start somewhere!!!!

Gotta agree, behind Ben, we got diddly squat. The $5MM part makes sense.

There's a good article on this over on Steelers Depot. Apparently Jason LaCanfora of NFL network reports that we are interested in Hoyer.

I'm not a big fan of his personally and think he's kind of an arrogant jerk but I'm sure we could do worse. However, I don't think we'll get him though.

It would be interesting to see how well Hoyer could play with the weapons we have. All he had was Hopkins in the awful loss to KC in the playoffs. How can anyone do well in the playoffs with one weapon? I think Hoyer would be a good backup for Ben. But he's going to command at least a 3-4 mil a year deal. Hell be a hot commodity.

People bashing on him for his playoff performance last year must be forgetting him looking like Dan Marino shredding our D while wearing a Clowns uniform a couple years ago.

He's head and shoulders better than anybody else on our depth chart. For the right price . . . absolutely I'd sign him.

This is kind of it for me as well.

I wouildn't be upset if we signed him, but surprised if the FO see a big difference between him and Landry.

I have no problems with having Hoyer as a backup for the right price. I think Gradkowski is done, and I feel that they still aren't sold on Landry Jones.
Remember Hoyer was a Steeler for a short period of time years ago. Just about a 1-2 week period though.

Definitely take him for the right price. He is better than Landry. But I doubt we get him. I think he will sign with a team where he has a shot to be a starter from the beginning of the season.

Only the Broncos MAY offer that opportunity. But rumor is that the Broncos have a draft day deal in place to trade for Kaperbum.
