I think the Steeler game was going to be the 1 pm Sunday game, but the NFL didn't want to screw the Vikings by playing them on Sunday night, then having them play on Saturday. Since both NFC games were on Sunday, CBS had to get one of the Saturday games.

If you look at the traditional playoff schedule it's usually always

    ABC - early sat
    NBC - night game sat
CBS/FOX - split the sunday games

The Steelers got moved up, which if they win, will help since they'll get an extra day for Denver.

I think Trent Green says the stupidest things, making stuff up as he goes along. Horrible. Hard to believe he was a QB.

Simms (and Aikman) have been hit in the head too many times.

I'd rather listen to the radio feed. Yeah, it's not synced with the TV feed but it's better than any of these TV hacks.

    Since we're on the topic.
Best play-by-play announcers I have heard: 1. Curt Gowdy; 2. Frank Gifford (when he did play-by-play); 3. Pat Summerall; 4. Al Michaels; 5. Kevin Harlan
Worst: 1. Lindsey Nelson (a voice like nails on a chalkboard); 2. Don Criqui; 3. Joe Buck; 4. Jim Nantz; 5. Dick Enberg/Vin Scully* (tie) (Both were always baseball voices to me and I couldn't stand listening to them do football)

    *Yes, Vin Scully did football:

I'm still confused as to why the Mara family would have any control over what Simms has to say? Is he on thier payroll?

I think the idea is that, like the Steelers, Giants players have a close bond with the family ownership. The Steelers and Giants organiuzations are remarkably similar--and the family ties only strengthen the similarity.

That said, I don't think the Maras are in the business of telling Phil Simms to tone down because some Steeler fans think he's biased against them.

Personally I keep the remote in hand and mute at will. Can't stand any of them. Listen to the play by play. Most of them are a bunch of noise.

Not a slam on you at all, you are perfectly entitled to your opinion - and I personally don't care for Simms just because I think he's an idiot, but that has nothing to do with any bias he may or may not have. However, if he were gushing about the Steelers all the time you'd be ok with that right?

I remember the experiment the NFL did (late 70s, early 80s) where they broadcast a game with no announcers at all. At first, I thought there was a problem with the TV. All in all, I liked not hearing the blather and cliches!

I heard Simms say lots of wonderful things about the Steelers just last night. Of course it was when my son and I were playing Madden 15 on the PS4 and we both picked the Steelers (he was home and I was away) to play against each other.

The past couple of years when I didn't have Direct TV and the NFL package I used to listen to Tunch and Wolfe on sirius satellite radio which would be about as close to a homer package as you could get locally from Pittsburgh but what I found was that when the team played great you could hear how excited they became but when they played like garbage you knew that as well. Granted, they are not nationally televised guys so that is what I would expect. The same can probably be said about most local announcers for their home town teams. Dave Lapham in Cincinnati does the same for the Bungles. Gets really excited when the do well but when they stink he tells it like it is.

As a national TV announcer Phil Simms is awful with his bias against certain teams and listening to him I have to believe that he down right cannot stand the Steelers. Dan Dierdorf, when he was on was the same way in my opinion. Chris Collinsworth used to be that way but really has changed to be more professional over the years. I actually respect him now more than any other national TV broadcaster.

There is a difference between being a hometown homer for a team and being a national broadcaster. As the latter, one should be held to a higher standard. There's a whole slew of them out there but Simms is the worst in my opinion.

I watched the Alabama-Michigan State game like this. Through Apple TV, you can choose ESPN viewing options. One of them is to watch the whole game, with no announcers, with the skycam/spidercam as the sole feed. It is an interesting way to watch.

Maybe I'm not paranoid enough but in the half century plus I've been watching games I've yet to find an announcer who specifically liked us or not. Sure some I enjoy listening to more than others. Mostly all I hear is we suck when we do and were good when we are.

If we want to hear nice things said, then earn it by winning,

The problem with current day announcers is the Play by Play guy does too much running commentary. That is NOT their job. If it is, then I don't want to hear their opinions. Buck, Nantz, and Tirico are horrible. Tirico annoys the hell out of me on MNF games. Buck as well. They give too much of their opinion when the "color" guy(s) is supposed to do that. Gifford knew when to shut up to let Howard and Dandy Don speak. Enberg/Olsen and Summerall/Madden were similar. They complemented each other pretty well. I know it's 2016 now but I'm old and hate Goodhell and all the jackhole announcers on every network. Al Michaels used to be great but he's older than dirt. Collinsworth is on the national primetime game so he has adjusted and is not as biased as he used to be.

I won't disagree on that part - like I said, Simms is an idiot. Just that there are a lot of folks that see it lopsided but wouldn't hesitate to call someone out as their "favorite" if they were praising their own team.

I think the biggest rub against Collinsworth for most, even though they somehow think he's a Steeler-hater, is that he tells it like it is. A hard pill to swallow for some.

Everyone has their own unfavorite sports talking head, and without disputing anyone else's pick, I think I cried tears of joy after finding out Dan Dierdorf had retired from the booth.

Interesting. I loved Dierdorf. The MNF team of Michaels, Gifford and Dierdorf was pretty damn good. Dierdorf was pretty funny sometimes...remember the bird that wouldn't leave the field during the Steelers win over Bills in 93? Dierdorf was so worried about that bird. He also cracked me up when trying to discuss an Eric Green TD vs Rams in 90. Green was a beast snd Dierdorf was in awe.

In all seriousness, Dan Dierdorf is by all accounts a great guy. Chris Collinsworth seems to be the least liked sportscaster of the people on this board. Of all the active sportscasters, I like Al Michaels best.

Mine was Madden! Hated the guy as a coach and a commentator!
Also, (don't hate me) I couldn't take listening to Myron. The first time I heard anything from him, I thought it was Gilbert Godfried!

Last week, I ended up listening to some of the Steelers game on NFL GamePass, and it gave me the Cleveland local radio broadcast. The play-by-play guy reminded me so much of Bob Uecker from Major League, even down to the deadpan/semi-ironic tone when the Browns screwed up.

I remember a long time ago telling a friend that I couldn't stand listening to Cope and he basically told me he is one of a kind. I then started taking Cope less serious and he kind of grew on me. It was kind of like listening to Harey Carey from the Cubs.

What I didn't like about Madden was that not only did you have to hear him during the game, you had to see him on every single commercial during the breaks. With all that endorsement money, plus the Madden NFL video game royalties, he must be the richest man on earth or have a lot of ex-wives, like Bradshaw.
