Harrison is listed as out and I know they had Chick coming off he other side in pre-season, but who's the other Right OLB?

It's got to be Chickillo right?

I'd like for him to get snaps so we can see what he offers. I have high hopes for him.

Bad luck for Jarvis. He finally gets the lion share of snaps, and it's against Joe Thomas, who most guys in the league wouldn't make a dent on.

I know it was not your intention Lizard, but wondering if the sixth rounder will get snaps over our former 1st is very telling. And I'm sure many others thought the same with seeing Harrison was out. I know I wondered who was taking JH's spot. I have more optimism about Chickillo than Jones unfortunately.

I thought he meant "will Chick get some snaps to spell Jarvis". I think Jarvis is getting better actually, but I would like to see Chick's highly touted first step against Joe Thomas.

That's what I meant. I think it's actually a good idea to make Thomas go against different styles often in this game.

Good news -- Bad news--- BN: Thomas regularly is at or near the top on everyones best LT rankings. So not a lot should be expected from that position. GN: Thomas has been there for quite a few years and well, the B&G are 11-0 vs Cle here so apparently other factors come into play here also.

But that is not what this reply is about. JHar not playing is devastating to me. I am not in the JJ is improving, JJ is getting it together, JJ is coming around --blah blah camp. Actually, I did not include him on my final 53 earlier this year. [But I was trying to win our club pool and you have to take some longshot chances to win things like that] But this also is not what this reply is about.

What it is about is--- [ and I was almost forced to use an expression for the 1st time for me ever like OMG]---

Out of curiosity I decided to take a look to see what JJ has been doing this year, fully expecting to see him not getting much of a ranking. I did some Googling and came across an article "Worst NFL players at Every Position This Season" from PFF [profootballfocus], a site I have little or no use for, but I took a look anyway. I really was expecting to see JJ finding his way on to this list. What I found was unbelievable. In several categories a Steeler made the list but they were all players I have a high regard for and nowhere was JJ to be found. But like I said I have never had any use for that site since their interpretation of their stats is usually worthless. But I do like what they try to do. They just don't know how to use their worthwhile info. Anyhow you won't believe this but here goes.'

Edge rushers: Chris Clemons, Jaguars, 44.8, and Bud Dupree, Steelers, 49.8 [are they nuts?]

Honorable Mention: Curtis Lofton (34.0), Lawrence Timmons (32.3) [yep, absolutely nuts]

Honorable Mention: Brandon Flowers (34.0), Antwon Blake (31.8) [well at least he is forcing TO's and even on occasion defends a pass]

I was not going to post the link but wtheck some might find the explanations amusing.

hmm don't think the link is live with that dark print but the address is correct.

I know what you mean, but perhaps because we've seen less of Chick, and as a 6th rounder everything is an upside. He's just potential, at the moment. With Jones, there's an understandable weight of expectation.

Maybe i'm watching a different Jarvis Jones. Better? James Harrison has gotten more snaps. Now he gets his chance as Snack indicated. Against arguably one of the best tackles in the game. So now we will see how Mr. Average fares...

Well, I'm eager to see Chick get some snaps to see what he can do. I'm not as negative on JJ as many here are, but I'm also not seeing the kind of play and improvement that I'd want to see from a #17 overall pick. Right now he is playing and improving at a level that I'd expect from a 4th or 5th round pick. He's a rotational OLB with some potential upside, and that's about it. I think JJ will be ok against the run tomorrow, but I expect him to have little or no success pass rushing against Joe Thomas. I'm not sure I would even try to have him get to Manziel through or around Thomas on every play, but rather have him "soft rush" in a number of passing situations to hold outside position to prevent Manziel from getting to the edge to make improv plays.

Nothing scientific, I just watch the "all-22" film cut-ups they post on SteelersDepot all the time and he doesn't get swallowed up by one lineman like he did his rookie year. He's actually good at setting the edge in the run game and got some nice pressures against the Raiders.

He probably never lives up to first round expectations, but I am trying to think about it like this: If he were a third round pick, I'd be pretty happy with how he's progressed. Pretty flimsy reasoning, I know, but it keeps me sane.

I agree, Elvis. If Manziel plays, the most important job for both OLB should be outside contain. Keep him in the pocket and he can't hurt you.

This is so true. We haven't seen what Chick can do so we're curious. He dominated the senior bowl and got off ball like he was shot out of a cannon. I'm looking forward to seeing that get off.

I was going to start a new thread with the following but figure it might just fit in here better. I would have called it "In an emergency"

Since JHar is out with an injury, I was just wondering who would play ROLB if JarJ sprained an ankle and Chickillo got the flu. I was thinking maybe Spence could fill in and be adequate. Even if they split the LOLB's they would need some backup.

Has anyone else noticed that he has really made a lot of progress and gets better every game. But like yesterday he only saw 12 snaps. Understandable, everyone seems to agree that ILB is a strong suit for the team. But his play merits more snaps. [JarJ 46snaps Chick 22.]

I'm aware of the fact that over the years this just does not happen. ILB's just never seem to adapt to the 3/4 OLB position. But maybe Spence could be an exception. I wonder if he has ever tried it. Last year I was thinking maybe V.Williams but nothing happened. Hey! These guys are good players they should be on the field.

I must admit, it is very puzzling to us casual fans, how a player could move over several feet to the left or right and suddenly can't play any more. Someone explain?

There's a world of difference between playing ILB and OLB in our scheme. The OLBs have to be able to match up with opponents' offensive tackles, both to rush the passer and set the edge against the run. That's why many 34 OLBs are former college defensive ends, and they're generally hybrid type of players - 1/2 LB and 1/2 defensive end. Spence is a smaller ILB who does not have the size and strength to line up against a lineman. Playing inside he's generally lined up a few yards deep and is protected by the big defensive linemen in front of him, and if the guys in front of him occupy the linemen he is able to flow to the football without having to engage an offensive lineman off the snap. The OLBs typically line up on the line and engage either offensive linemen or tight ends on the snap. Also, when our OLBs rush the passer, the goal is to have them be unaccounted for, or at worst picked up by a running back in pass protection. We're trying to overload a particular inside gap to get the ILB in free. If you see Spence get to the passer, he almost certainly got there without engaging an offensive lineman. By contrast, our OLBs are going to be accounted for by the offense on pass plays, and will usually be operating against tackles, and sometimes even be double teamed. Its also likely that most, if not all, of our OLBs would be less effective inside than they are outside because they are less suited to flow sideline to sideline or cover downfield. Hope that helps a bit.

Wardismvp said: : "I believe Chick will overtake JJ."

---Maybe so. It's not like he's going to have to run a 2minute mile or something but he is going to have to improve on his performance Sunday. He played 22 snaps and his production was minimal.

FR [Fumble recovery] QH [QB hurry] He did that? Wow! I missed that. Must have been when I dozed off.

TBH I have not been re- re- re- watching the games like in past years. So there is no focus on this. These stats tell only a limited story. For example in an earlier post it was seen that Dupree stat wise did not look good. He is fine and that side of the line is okay for the future. The reason for so much concern about the R side is I really believe that if they find a way to continue the legacy of Holmes, Porter, & Harrison this D will be right back at the top where it belongs. It is not there now.

I would guess that you could find 22 plays in a row where Jones' production line looked very much like Chickillo's production line. In fact if you take all of his line and compare to snaps, you can find 41 plays total which match Chick's line. If it was not his first game I would factor that in more, but this literally was the first snaps that Chick has ever had on defense in and NFL game. I don't think we have any idea what his potential is yet. When you add in the position change from DE hand on the ground to standing up OLB in this defense I need more info on Chick before I make any decisions.

This actually doesn't surprise me as much as it did you. I didn't expect to see JJ anywhere near the "worst" list in the NFL rankings. I'd more likely expect him to be around average as a pass rusher (maybe slightly below), and above average against the run.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Dupree is on the "worst" list. He is a rookie, and will be making rookie mistakes over the year that put him on the list. While he has shown flashes of high end potential, I wasn't expecting him to be an average NFL starter in his first season... Especially with how raw he was coming in.

    Blake... Yeah he belongs there

Timmons hasn't had a really great year this year. Maybe not a NFL "worst" level of bad, but he definitely has had a much tougher year this year than he has in years past.

Chick is still learning the position. It will take time. Hopefully he picks it up quickly, because I think this is Harrison's last year (because of our cap situation) and Chick will need to be a big part of our depth at the OLB position moving forward.

Drafts shouldn't be considered equal. JJ might be considered a 3rd round pick if were drafted a year sooner or a year later. Not sure why people continue to harp on where a player was drafted.

It seems that injuries probably hurt JJ's development. Time will tell if he can stay healthy and play with more consistency going forward. It would be a real shame for the Steelers to release him only to watch him become a play maker for another team.
