Okay so when do we draft a QB in the first round or top rounds? I don't want Ben to go anywhere but can we find someone to sit and learn and step in when needed and possibly be the future. What do yall think.

I think it depends on what we see out of Landry Jones the remainder of this season. If he proves to be a capable starter we won't be in a big hurry to draft a QB early (first 3 rounds). If LJ basically sucks wind, our approach may change.

It's probably going to be a while. Picking Mike Vick up shows they aren't very serious about the position.

It won't be for a while. I still think Ben could easily make it to 38, maybe even 40 if his arm strength holds and he still has the desire to play. That takes us to about 2020-2022. Now there are circumstances that can make him leave the game early (injury, depleting arm strength, desire to be with family), so that could change things.

Ultimately I'm thinking we go QB early about 2 years before Ben hangs them up for good. The FO will have a pretty good idea of when that will be. I'll guess 2019 early round QB selection.

The organization should draft the next franchise QB if they believe that player is available to them in the draft.

When you see signs that #7 can't protect himself, or cannot escape
    the pass rush. 2 years.

It should be at least 2-3 years from now. With rookie contracts now limited to 4 years (with a 5th year option for 1st rounders only), it doesn't make sense to draft a future starter until Ben is close to done. I don't think Ben is close to being done.

This. You can't put a timetable on these things. When the player you think is the next franchise qb is there you take him.

It needs to be taken seriously and set as a priority, the clock is ticking.

I believe the secondary this draft is the priority, not Bens eventual replacement.

How long did Aaron Rodgers sit behind Favre? Was it 2-3 years? Seems like a better format than throwing a rookie into the starting line up.... Like Cleveland or something.

I could see it happening sooner rather than later. But that's not how our FO has rolled on offense players. It would be nice to have a couple years of mentoring with BB

Unless you are way at the top of the draft, how do you know
Unless you are way at the top of the draft, how do you know you have The next franchise QB? A lot of flops out there. Kinda seems like you need a crystal ball. Not arguing with you. Just not sure how one makes the determination?

My guess is it will be when ben is gone. Not that I agree with it. Unless a sure fire guy is there wen we pick, I just don't see it. I also hope we are at least picking deep in round one for awhile.lol

Maybe an Rodgers falls to us like packers got. That's the only scenario I could see as long as ben is here.

Landry Jones is 26. Keep him around.
Ben is 33 and is signed until the 2019 season.

If you could keep Landry around another 4 years he would be 30. Not an old person for a QB. Plus how many more times will Ben get hurt the next 4 years is probably high.

That bad part Landry will want to start some where for a team, if he shows promise and some team will give him a shot.

When it comes to that. Look for a new future QB in the mid rounds once again.

They need to stop using picks on QBs. Realistically as long as Ben is playing they won't have a top 10 pick the following year and you really need the first or second pick to find a franchise QB often.

Ben was 13th I think but he would have been higher without Rivers and Eli.

Rodgers was 24th and Brady was picked do low it causes him to cry on camera.

    There are exceptions.

But the Steelers spent a 4th on Landry and three years later bring in a veteran FA to start over him anyways. Now that he's finally getting a chance he is doing well.

Wait until Ben retires, tank the following season like the Colts, and draft the next Andrew Luck.

I would guess at least 3-4 years especially if Landry continues to show promise and progression. This week is a big opportunity for Landry. It is impressive he took the backup job from Vick and now he needs to show he can be the man when he has a full week to prepare. The issue is if Landry wants to start someplace else and what or if the Steelers could get for him in a trade, assuming Landry is under contract if/when he decides he wants his shot.

At this point I am a lot more worried about our secondary, OL depth, DL depth and LB depth before I would even think about drafting a QB...

Even at the top of the draft you'll never be certain(leaf, rg3...) hence the when you think part of my post.

I hope Marquise Williams doesn't go to high . He is ranked as the 18th or so best QB right now with no predicted round . I think he will move up to a mid round guy . IMO he could be the steal of the draft he shows a lot of in the pocket stuff just like Ben and has a very strong arm...

IF there in the 3rd. round the Steelers should jump all over this pick... I have watched this kid since high school he is not just a running QB he can make all the throws ...

Well.... I certainly agree that we shouldn't be spending a first rounder on a QB anytime soon. However, to be fair you've left out some successes in the 1st round like Luck, Newton, Carr, etc.

Oh, and you did forget one more flop that pops into mind -RG3, who was supposedly as close to a sure thing as Luck in the minds of many "experts."

Thats why I said, need I name more, like Joey Harrington, Patrick Ramsey, and yes RG3 is a flop, and for every 1st rounder thats a success, there are 3 or 4 other ones that dont make it, I just hope we dont draft one of those 3 or 4 in the future, and by the way luck isnt having a good year this year, due to whatever he has had only 1 good game this year and that was this week against the broncos, and Derik Carr was a second round pick............

It works differently for different players. Ben was basically thrown in there as a rookie (even if it was because of injury). It's also been alright for guys like Carr, Dalton, Wilson, the Mannings, Flacco etc.

The key is to have a good offense around the rookie so he doesn't have to be a stud right away. Learn to manage the game first, then come into your own.

With all that said, I still want a couple years for the next guy because the QB position in college has changed. College football is an absolute joke compared to NFL in quality of play, and in the way the game is played. There are basically zero pro style offenses anymore, and you basically have to re teach these kids how to play the position after you draft them. These crazy offenses in college do these kids no favors in their pro careers, and I think that the QB's and the WR's have it the worst.

With all the positions of need for the Steelers in next year's draft I don't think QB is up there. They need pretty much every position.

Actually Landry Jones is by far more advanced in this offense than any rookie we could draft, he has shown he can play on the field, and now all he needs to do is convert it to game wins when he is the starter and just not winning playing in relief: The reason we dont seem to have depth is because we have 15 players on IR, get them back and depth wise we wont be in such a bad way.....http://www.steelersdepot.com/tag/injured-reserve/
